The story focuses on the broken relationship with his family, friends, and coworkers. The author focuses on how during this era, the early 1900's, society will shun those who are living a different lifestyle people are accustomed to. During this WW1 era life has little joys of those who suffered through tragedies or poverty. The war is destroying the world, tearing families apart, and killing millions of people at a time. Most artist and authors during this time works reflect on the emotion and changing world around them and Franz Kafka was no different. This story is about a boy named Dave as he faces the struggle of coming into his own as a man. Like most seventeen year-olds he want to be considered a man but is not matured fully as a man. He is an African-American growing up in the rural south working on a farm. This story touches on the African American struggle post slavery as you can see from most of the text there is big gap in the living environment between their white counterpart. The social issues between the two are noticable throughout the whole story. Dave who is not accepting how he is treated by his friends and accosiates wants to be treated with respect so he goes out and get a gun. The gun shows us that he is not a man yet and highlight his immaturity. Against his mother wishes he goes out and shoots the gun and kills the farm's mule.
