The novel Indian Horse, the short story The Reluctant Black Hawk, and the poem The Medicine Man all explored the same themes regarding aboriginal voices and identity, but in The Reluctant Black Hawk and Indian Horse, they have the same subject of a Canadian sport of ice hockey and characters as hockey players experienced hardships in residential school systems, and racism and discrimination during the protagonists’ growing lives according to their own stories which differ with The Medicine Man. In The Indian Horse, as the storyteller, Saul called aboriginal people “my people” to differentiate themselves from others.
