The poem “Mother to Son” is a poem where the mother who is also the speaker of the poem is trying to give advice to her son on how to keep hope and encouragement to move forward in life, no matter what obstacles you face or what life throws at you. The theme of the poem is that everyone is equally as valuable and every person should be treated with respect. The attitude of the poem speaks with purpose to inform people how the world should be and how people should treat each other. I believed that the speaker lived during a time when a racial discrimination against people was going on.
