Comparative Analysis: The idea of respect and control in marriage in The Wife of Bath prologue and The Book of Margery Kempe. (Rough Draft)
The lives of medieval women figures such as Wife of Bath and Margery Kempe gives us a great knowledge about the marriage life in that time. These women gave us an insight in their lives and we were able to know more about their marriages and how they were the same yet very different as we will further see. The Wife of Bath, a strong woman who have been married five times tell us in her prologue about the details of her marriages and how her husbands were to her. She got wealthy from her previous husbands and she manipulated them to get all that she desires from them by using her words or using her husbands ' lust toward her to achieve what she wants from them. She described sex in marriage saying it 's owed from both partners fulfilling their sexual needs to prevent them from adultery. It is not just a method for conceiving but also an entertainment for both partners. She used her sexual organ as a tool to get what she wanted from her husband 's. To her, her husbands were both debtors and slaves(155). We see in this part an indication that The Wife of Bath had all the control in the marriage and no control was given to the husbands. Her husbands loved here and were completely devoted to her while she didn 't show them love in return. She had so much control and governed her husbands so well making them happy and eager to buy her all sorts of pretty things to satisfy her and they were fully glad to do so.
