Comparison of the “Bridegroom” and “Everyday Use” short stories
Introduction
In the book by Alice Walker, Everyday Use, she tells about lessons that are true to hertiage, which can get it and what it is while in the Bridegroom, Ha Jin narrates a story of his son in law who was institutionalized because of the homosexuality. My essay therefore aims at comparing the two books to see how they relate to each other.
In the book “Everyday Use”, the parent-daughter conflict is based on who will get the quilt and the primary problem is based on who will get their mothers love. The quilt symbolizes the acceptance of their mother. It also shows their mothers love that is put on the relationship. Comparatively, the author of the story Bridegroom focuses on sparrows more than once in the story, this helps to highlight the impacts of homogenization on individuals. Immediately after the arrest of Baowen, Cheng allows an interruption of his thought so as to allow him compare it to a sparrow which is a common bird. He thinks that a single sparrow with a set of organs which is complete on its own, and just like others can disturb the structure of its society, which is the same way a political rebel can disturb the whole human society. This manner of thinking allows him to aknowledge the use of the full force of the law in handling this crime, and gets prepared for whatever penalty that might be given out.
The story, “Everyday Use”, is about two ladies. One is intelligent, very successful in life and even went to college. Their mother is proud of this lady and she even brags about her daughters achievements. The lady lives in a separate city and when she comes home, the mother becomes very excited. While Maggie, is simple and shy. During her childhood she was burnt as a result she has scars on the legs and arms. This lady lives with her mother and she is timid with her older sister.
