Comparison and Contrast of Division 13 and Division 14
Industrial and organizational psychology is represented by two divisions: 1) Division 13 – Society of Consulting Psychology (SCP); and Division 14 – Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). The following paragraphs comprise of the history, mission, community involvement, and resources of each division.
History
Division 13 was established in 1920 from the American Psychological Association (APA) to recognize the expertise of psychologists in the consulting arena. Subsequently, in 1924, bylaws were adopted and Division 13 became the Division of Consulting Psychology. Fast forward 80 years later to 2004, wherein Division 13was renamed the Society of Consulting Psychology (SCP) (SIOP, 2011). An elite membership group, the Society “consisted of those who had fellowship status (the highest membership category) and who were qualified to serve as psychological examiners or consultants” (APA, 2011, p. 1). Unfortunately, this elite group could not agree on the terms and condition of its membership and parted ways for approximately two decades. Division 13 was later established in 1946 as one of 19 charter divisions within APA. Interestingly, until 1963, one of the membership prerequisites of Division 13 was that members were required to be members of other APA divisions (SIOP, 2011). From the late 1800s to the late 1970s, Division 14 went through a number of changes due to membership dissatisfaction as a result of such factors as: 1) lack of acknowledgement of applied areas of psychology; 2) improvement of status among industrial psychologists; and 3) lack of interest to the concerns of applied and professional psychologists (SIOP, 2011).
