In every story or fairy tale it is always issues of good and evil that intensify and escalate conflict. In the Gladiator and in the epic poem Beowulf, there were many similarities that occurred. For instance Maximus and Beowulf were well respected, loyal, and they fought for what they believed in. In both stories the good and evil manifested through the themes of Man vs. Man, and Man vs. Fate and Destiny.
The characteristics of good is defined as one being positive in nature, which characterizes Beowulf and Maximus. They were very positive people and helpful to others. On the other hand the characteristics of evil is defined as the act of being wicked, which resembled the characteristics of Grendel and Commodus. Grendel and Commodus both were wretched.
Beowulf was a powerful warrior who fought Grendel, as to Maximus was a mighty warrior who battled Commodus. Grendel was jealous of the people in Herot Hall, because he had no one to associate with. He lived dark and gloomy. So to make others miserable, he attacked them viciously. This is when Beowulf takes over and battles him in Herot Hall one on one. Beowulf killed Grendel by pulling his arm from his socket, which made him bleed to death. However Maximus most important dual was with Commodus. Commodus was jealous of Maximus because Marcus Aurelis chose Maximus as his heir. He did everything in his power to have Maximus killed, but Maximus over came many of Commodus challenges. This is when the battle begins. Commodus cut Maximus so he won't be as powerful. Even though this slowed his energy down, he still managed to kill Commodus.
At the end of both stories Beowulf and Maximus dies. They both fought for their people. Beowulf fought to save King Hrothgar and his men, while Maximus fault for Rome. It was Beowulf's destiny to make sure that his people were safe, and it was Maximus destiny to free the slaves. They were both destined to go to heaven.
