knowledge and skills needed for the job. Pediatricians are,"physicians who diagnose, treat, and help prevent children's diseases and injuries" (Pediatricians, General). Before becoming a certified pediatrician, people aspiring to become one must go through a necessary education process. "Pediatricians must complete four years of college, four years of medical school and a 3-8- year residency" (General Pediatrician). Pediatricians do not work alone; they work in hospitals with other pediatricians, nurses, and patients.
Along with pediatricians, teachers have certain duties that they are required to do every day. Teachers must be able to, "teach students basic academic, social, and other formative skills in public or private schools at the elementary level" (Elementary School Teachers). Teachers are also required to have a certain education level in order to teach. "Elementary teachers are expected to have at least a bachelor's degree in teaching or a subject-specific area, such as math or English, accompanied by a teaching certificate in accordance with their state's requirements" (How to Become). In similarity to pediatricians, teachers work as a team in schools, alongside other faculty, staff, and students.
The two professions have many similarities when it comes to the responsibilities that they have. Both pediatricians and teachers must know how to be social and communicate well with others. They must know the English language, psychology, how to actively listen and speak, and have social perceptiveness (CareerZone). Along with being social, both pediatricians and teachers have to continue their education after high school by following a path in their career choice. For example, pediatricians must continue their education for about eleven years after high school (A Pediatricians Training). Teachers however, only have to continue their education for about four more years (How to Become). Pediatricians and teachers also have a big impact on the development of kids and their future. Statements such as, "...these physicians watch their patients grow from bouncing babies into adults as their careers progress..." (The Pros and Cons) and "those passionate about teaching point to the benefits of working with children and positively influencing the lives of their students" (Advantages & Disadvantages), show that a career in these fields would allow people to greatly influence children.
Both pediatricians and teachers are required to have a certain education level in order to work in their profession.
For pediatricians, one must go through four years of undergraduate school and take premedical classes, then do four years of medical in which they learn more in depth about medicine, and finally, take three to eight years of residency in the hospital they wish to work at (A Pediatricians Training). Teachers, on the other hand, have to get their undergraduate degree that is focused on teaching, complete a teacher preparation program in which they practice teaching lessons, and pass the certification exam (How to Become). Pediatricians require graduate school in which people can acquire their master's degree, Ph.D., or M.D. While pediatricians require graduate school, teachers only require a bachelor's or master's …show more content…
degree.
Pediatricians and teachers have a set environment as to where they work in and need to know how to socially interact with others.
For instance, pediatricians work in hospitals, while teachers work in schools. Pediatricians do not work alone; they work with other pediatricians, nurses, patients, and other staff. Teachers also do not work alone; they work with other teachers, faculty, staff, and students. Pediatricians must be able to, "explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients and parents or guardians" (Pediatricians, General). As well as instructing the children and teaching them new information through lectures, teachers must "meet with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress and to determine priorities for their children and their resource needs" (Elementary School Teachers). With this information, it is evident that being social and knowing how to communicate and cooperate with others is a very important skill in these
careers.
The pay and benefits that pediatricians and teachers are given are very good. For pediatricians, "in 2015, the average annual wage in California was $197,800" (Pediatricians, General). Along with the very good pay, pediatricians get a numerous amount of benefits such as health insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, fifteen vacation days, nine sick days, maternity/ paternity leave, conference leave, eleven paid holidays, and flexible hours (Internal Medicine/Pediatrics and A Pediatrician Career). Teachers get paid a good amount as well, with the average pay being between $47,010 to $97,280 (Elementary School Teachers). Some of the health benefits that teachers are given cover health, dental, and vision (Teacher Salary). Teachers also get the same vacation days as students, so they get summer, thanksgiving, winter, and spring break off.
The daily tasks for pediatricians and teachers are not very similar. For example, pediatricians have to examine, diagnose, and treat children, while teachers have to teach all of the subjects to the class in a clear and understandable way (CareerZone). Another difference is that pediatricians monitor the illness and growth of patients while teachers provide kids with needed materials for that day's lesson (CareerZone). Finally, one last difference is that pediatricians thoroughly explain the treatments for their patients, while teachers must establish class rules and lecture most days (CareerZone). Despite the differences, both pediatricians and teachers are influential figures to the children they work with.
In conclusion, becoming a pediatrician or a teacher would be a great career choice to pursue. Although pediatricians and teachers are two different careers, they still have plenty of similarities and differences. They both require a specific education, the ability to work in a team, and give good benefits. However, they both have their own required skills, pay, and daily tasks. Both careers impact the lives of the kids they encounter and can provide a better future for them.
