As analysis is conducted into the characters of both Chief Bromden and Randle McMurphy, it is easy to conclude that both have characteristics and preform actions that can be considered heroic. Physically both Bromden and McMurphy are huge. But, unlike McMurphy, Bromden does not have the self-confidence to match his gigantic exterior. This contrast in personality is due to the idea that Bromden has constantly been maltreated for the entirety of his life. The American Revolution was a time of great fear and immense turmoil. Today, however, the war is seen by many Americans as honorable revolutionists (Whigs) battling an oppressive British regime while rooting out evil Tories (Loyalists) and befriending Indians. Though not entirely accurate, the accounts often brought forward by researchers tended to exaggerate the events that had transpired. One such exaggeration would be Great Britain’s implementation of the Southern Strategy. Jim Piecuch, author of “Three Peoples, One King”, sought to rectify these inconsistences through careful research and extensive historical sources. Piecuch believed that while the strategy relied heavily on supporters of the crown, the roles of Loyalist and Indians were…

Through similarities and differences, these two men made choices that deemed them rebellious. They made choices that made them outcasts of society. They led adventures worthy of being told over and over again, through centuries and centuries. And somehow, Chris McCandless and Mahatma Gandhi still, were also very different. Same rebellious ways, but different acts to show that rebellion. Both outcasts of society, but somehow accepted. Adventures worthy of being told over and over, but told in contexts of praise, recklessness, and boldness. Chris McCandless and Mahatma Gandhi lived a journey outside of society, but somehow, their contrasting stories became one inside of…

There are several arguments that Calloway concludes with in The Victory with No Name. The primary argument is his notion that Native Americans deserve more credit than what American history has given them. Calloway states, “the day when American Indians won their greatest victory became an aberration in the national story and a blank spot in the national memory,” and argues the book will “restore the memory” of this victory (10). Moreover, Calloway demonstrates that “St. Clair’s defeat” represented the weakness and vulnerability of the new American republic, stating, “The destruction of St. Clair’s army reaffirmed westerners’ concerns that the federal government lacked the resolve to bring order,” and illustrated throughout the book that lack of communication and resources from the federal government caused the defeat of the first American army. Nevertheless, Calloway shows that Native…

The author, Gordon Wood is trying to uphold all the characteristics of the American revolutionary characters and also how their individual role combined to make todays present United states. Washington is the only true typical hero we have ever had, who had a lifelong obsession with his reputation for impartiality. Hamilton argued for a society with wealthy classes, administrations in government, and strong banking. He wanted to be both the big-business man and big-government man, and while fighting for both, he became the man who made modern America. Aaron Burr, who was considered to have a bad personality with no principles other than self-interest, has become the model for the modern politician, who works for his friends and his own special interests. John Adams, a man of respectable character and high values, is shown as a man who lost his connection with the political world. The most interesting chapter was about Thomas Paine because he is rarely considered as one of the founders, though his writings were very important in the revolution. Paine was the first public scholar whose messages awakened not only the politicians but also the common people. Benjamin Franklin’s role as an example of hard work and self-reliance, as well as the selfless patriot, is a…

    Wendell Phillips

Wendell Phillips portrays a few commendable figures of Europe that have been extolled as the greatest minds of the time through the use of hyperbole. In the beginning of the passage, he describes Napoleon as a man whom the French found “no language rich enough to paint the great captain of the nineteenth century.” Although Phillips is praising the prestige of Napoleon, he is also making a caustic comment on how the Frenchmen would do whatever it takes to shine the glory of Napoleon’s success. Like the hyperbole used in the depiction of Napoleon, another phrase similarly illustrates the success of Washington, whom the Americans consider “no marble white enough on which to carve the name of the Father of his Country.” Through his use of hyperbole, Phillips conveys to the audience the pompous attitude each country holds in reverencing its own national hero. Because of Phillips’s use of hyperbole to exaggerate the reputation of each national hero, the audience expects to hear the same kind of appraisal for the African American hero, general Toussaint Louverture; however, in following part of the passage, Phillips describes him as a man who was degraded by the scanty traces of written pieces…

    Geronimo Essay

Geronimo displayed the core values of the Apache tribe, that of courage, diligence, and aggressiveness. These core values were what kept them relatively safe from the increasing white settlement of the west, including Arizona and New Mexico (theinitialjourney.com.) Aggressiveness, or assertiveness, and diligence are key aspects of a leader. A leader must be assertive as well as persistent in order to maintain a certain level of self-confidence and influence over those who are being led, even in the face of adversity. Geronimo was a great example of an assertive leader. Geronimo led the last major Native American Fighting force to surrender to the United States; thus having the longest resistance period. Upon the discovery that his mother, wife, and his three young children had been murdered by Spanish troops, he vowed to avenge his family by retaliating against as many Mexican settlements as possible. It was not until this time that he received his ‘power’ of seeing visions (Indigenouspeople.net.) It was because Geronimo held out the fight for so long, that he became the most famous Apache of all. By asserting himself and applying himself in order to uphold his values of family and justice, Geronimo became an essential force as medicine man, acting in and out of combat as a spiritual and intellectual leader of the people (not a chief.) He escaped from a reservation three times, the final time bringing thirty five warriors and one hundred nine women and children…

The American Voice is characterized by the theme of Bravery. This is demonstrated in the last paragraph when the Author states “ give me liberty or give me death”!. This means that he’d fight for his freedom or die trying. This idea is also found in “ I, Too, Sing America “, by Langston Hughes when he states “but I laugh, eat well, and grow strong”. This means that even though he is not treated right, he maintains to be strong. This supports the claim because it shows that Americans are not afraid, that they are brave.…
