Ideologies are a set of values and beliefs that can incorporate a range of factors including social, economic and political principles. Ideologies can become political when they are articulated in a concrete form as a programme of action e.g. a political manifesto. In the UK politics there have been numerous leading ideologies but there are five major ones; these include Conservatism, Anarchism, Socialism and Liberalism. These five ideologies have played a significant role in history by determining governments and political movements. However the political ideology of the current government is dominated by New Right ideology. This ideology consists of two elements. These are economic liberal attitude and individual choice and responsibility (Conor Newman, Jan 2008). The way that this political ideology affects health and social care policy includes the significance of individuals taking control over their own health and well-being through decentralisation of services and also the initiation of a superior role third sector (e.g. charities) and private…
In Michael Harrington’s The Other America, he describes how the evolution of the American welfare transformed the aspect of the federal government. Furthermore, Harrington lays and points out that poverty is an issue being hidden and disguised. In the mid 1960s, President Johnson with the assistance of an evolving U.S economy were able to gain new laws on health, education, poverty, and housing. Recent and larger programs of the Great Society were nonetheless amongst the uttermost critical and significant adjustments in the American government. This modification ultimately changed the lives of countless Americans. In spite of the rate of poverty decreasing, President Johnson issued a call for an “unconditional war on poverty.” Conservatives…
Since Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, much has been done to address poverty in the United States. Over time, there have been both changes and continuities. One continuity is that politicians have kept Medicare, Medicaid, and the Education subsidies from LBJ’s plan largely intact. One change is that LBJ’s plan focused on directly providing money to those in poverty, while later plans focused on getting people jobs.…
‘Two glass jars with different labels, both empty’; this has long been the popular opinion of the differences between the two major US parties, the Democrats and Republicans. However, in recent decades, we have seen the emergence of two distinct ideological identities in both the UK, and US. Liberalism has emerged – a belief that the federal government should have an active role in protecting the vulnerable and guaranteeing rights, and Conservatism, a belief that the government should be restricted in order for the individual to achieve their potential. However, the extent to which the Democrats and Liberal Democrats, supposedly Liberal parties, and the Republicans and Conservatives, who promote themselves as such ‘conservative’ right wing-ers, adhere to these philosophies is arguable.…
The Radical Republicans were a minority group of Republican congressmen whose Ideas differ from those of the Moderate Republicans and Conservative Republicans. Their political faction lasted from around 1854 to 1877. During the Civil War Radical Republicans, favored the enlistment of black troops and call for the emancipation of slavery. They opposed and criticized President Abraham Lincoln a Moderate Republican for not moving fast enough to abolish slavery and for his selection of military commanders during the civil war. After the civil war had ended Radical Republicans call for harsher punishment for the ex-confederate rebels. They favor equality, voting rights, and civil rights for African Americans. In 1864 Radical Republicans attempted…
Conservatism as a political belief signifies an amalgamation of political ideologies including fiscal conservatism, free market or economic liberalism, social conservatism and religious conservatism, It also includes a support for a strong military, small government, and states ' rights. The tactics of conservatism vary widely by place and time. But the most central feature of conservatism is deference: a psychologically internalized attitude on the part of the common people that the aristocracies are better people than they are. Modern-day liberals often theorize that conservatives use "social issues" as a way to mask economic objectives, but this is almost backward: the true goal of conservatism is to establish an aristocracy, which is a social and psychological condition of inequality. Economic inequality and regressive taxation, while certainly welcomed by the aristocracy, are best understood as a means to their actual goal, which is simply to be aristocrats. More generally, it is crucial to conservatism that the people must literally love the order that dominates them.…
Radical Republican ideology was focused on the question of reconstruction. They believed that reconstruction was more important than the economy or any other concerns of the time. The two most prominent Radical Republican leaders, Thaddeus Stevens and Charles Sumner, did not even agree on economic plans. (Foner 106) Instead, they wanted to use the expansion of power gained during the war, as a means to promote free labor, equality under the law, and black suffrage. Many wanted to see the plantation economy of the south transform into the family farms and small towns of New England, Upstate New York, and Ohio. (Foner 107) For some, this plan included giving freed slaves plots of lands. Radical…
Charles X was recently appointed as King of France by the Allied powers after the Fall of Napoleon . France has been actively pursuing their liberalist acts creating conflicts between them and conservative parties in their country. The French society is now questioning the decision…
As the United States we all want peace, health and happiness. The argument in government is there are different ways about going about to get these key things to make the world we live in better. There are Liberals and conservatives, both have ideas on how we should run our government and they are very different from one another. The liberals are a group that believes that we should all live in a state of equality, opportunity, and they are open to new opinions and don't believe we should just stick to traditions of our values. The conservatives are a group that believes in traditional values, they believe in the way that policies started and that things should not change. They believe the individuals should solve problems unlike liberals…
Moreover, the radical lefts are extremely infuriated by the 1996 welfare reform act. They critically oppose the reform act, arguing that it is a dreadful policy that severely harms low-income families, primarily children. Additionally, they believe that welfare reform fails to recognize redistribution to those who are poverty-stricken, and for this reason, welfare should be offered to individuals without any accountability or anything in return.…
A crucial controversy of America today is the growing gap between the wealthy and the poor, and the discrepancy is caused by capitalism run wild and only the helping hand of the government can only fix the problem. A question that turns the tables is what if the growing wealth disparity in America is actually caused by the government? For years, the idea that inequality is economically neutral has been the prevailing view not just among traditionalists but also between most Americans outside the further reaches of a political audience. There could be ideological or moral reasons to object to a growing gap between the wealthy and the rest but for economic reasons, there are no such. Furthermore, there are many ways inequality places itself in America. In our society, a good amount of the population is forced to stand up and work for our country while hardly being redeemed for their time and effort, thus the problem of income inequality. An estimate of these people live from paycheck to another, barely coping with life itself, not because they cannot manage their money well, but the reason is that…

In every country and civilization that has ever existed, there has and will always be an unequal spread of capital among the people. Governments have tried to establish balance in society by means of communism and socialism, but it is evident that these methods simply do not work. However, human ethics tells us that helping those in need is a virtue that must be performed. In our society, this virtue has manifested itself in the various welfare programs that the government funds with the money…
From its very beginnings, the American social welfare system was greatly influenced by the nation’s belief in individualism and limited government intervention, which resulted in reluctance to distribute resources from “haves” to the “have nots” (Axinn & Stern, 2008).…
Anti-poverty programs are designed, selected, and implemented in response to different theories about the cause of poverty that justify the human services field and its development of interventions. The definition of poverty and its theories are rooted in research traditions and political values. They are reinforced by encompassing social, political and economic institutions that have a stake in the issue. Thus, a purely objective explanation of poverty is displaced by a proliferation of socially defined issues and concerns from both liberal and conservative perspectives. No one theory of poverty has emerged that either subsumes or invalidates the others (Blank, 1997).…
