Comparison Of Hush And Don T Breathe

When thinking of a horror movie, the thought of jump scares (something that is so sudden it makes the viewers jump like a loud noise) and hideous monsters come to mind. Hush is not about some monster to hide from or keeping quiet for fear of being heard. Hush is a horror movie centered around a deaf and mute author, Maddie, who lives alone with her cat. There are few that involve characters with disabilities. A more well-known movie that came out quite recently is Don’t Breathe. Though both movies came out in 2016, Hush isn’t as recognizable. I believe this movie deserves more attention. What makes a horror movie good would be originality, a good twist, a sense of unease or fear, good characters, good sound design, and good acting.
The antagonist of this movie is different from other horror movie killers. It gives the movie more originality. He displays some strategizing and smarts instead of the usual attack first types. This murderer understands when he is outmatched and waits for the perfect opportunity to take down a guy twice his size. The killer also removes his mask early in the movie and plays mind games with the protagonist. He tells her that he can get in the house whenever he wants and toys with her. In one scene he uses the first victim of the movie to knock on the window. When Maddie notices his knocking, she gets up
About two-thirds of the way into the movie there is a big twist that shows the imaginative mind Maddie has. In the scene, she makes a run for it and gets caught. When she dies the viewer thinks it is the end, however, it is revealed that she was going through scenarios in her mind. This scene is refreshing to see a horror film that isn’t predictable and the viewer doesn’t expect it. I wish they would’ve expanded on this a little more though.
