Motown and Stax had very different ways of running their business. Motown had Barry Gordy, who made the artists go to a school to teach them how act. "... But a wealth of new music by african-american performers flourished during this period. Among the most important devlopments was the music that came out of Motown Records- an idependent company whose most important era of success parallels that of the beatles." (covach/flory, pg 223) Stax records used a studio band to get the music. The intended audience of the two
records were different. Barry Gordy of motown “Knew where the money was at”(Barry gordy) Motown targeted young white teens. Stax/atlantic targeted black teens.
The images of the artists was very important to Motown and to Stax/Atlantic. Motown would use very expensive clothing and charm-school for the artists.” The enormous crossover appeal of Motown’s records and in the artists in the mid-1960’s combined with Gordy’s desire to appeal to white audiences” (covach/flory pg234) Atlantic/stax would scout for the artists then would teach them the “the stax sound”.
The three things that Motown and Stax/Atlantic was different is business, intended audience, and the image of artists. I believe the better one is Motown due to their more professional take on music.
