Although some valid points have been raised in favour of ‘traditional’ rugby tackles, the chilling statistic that “5-25% of injuries in rugby league are head injuries” still remains.…
Soccer and basketball players get momentarily maiming injuries all the time, like perpetually ripped and torn tendons that take them out for even seasons at a time. Football players work in way less safe conditions than any motorsport driver ever. They are more likely to have brain altering concussions, and end up penniless, after leaving the sport; than a driver is to perish or even crash in his or her car.…
Rugby union is based on the 'right to contest possession'. A team is not required to surrender possession when the ball carrier is tackled, in contrast to American football, where a team must surrender their possession when a player is tackled and no downs remain. Rugby union players must win possession in open play, unless the team in possession makes an infringement, scores, or the ball leaves the field of play.…
Football consists of a team of talented, skilled individuals that display strength, power and speed to play the game. Without these traits, a player will certainly be a failure to the game and the team. It is a very rough form of entertainment that we all love to watch with our families and friends. It is rather ironic that although we do not promote players to hurt each other; in the game of football, we seem to send the opposite message that it’s alright to get hurt, nonetheless, a sport where players understand that in order to stand out amongst other players, the harder they exert effort into the game also increases their risk of sustaining unpredictable injuries.…
The physical activities involved differ in the two games. American football players are involved in activities such as tackling and this is…
In Soccer, the players have to wear uniforms which consist of shorts, shirts, socks, and cleats. For protection players only have shin guards to use and the goalkeeper has padded gloves to avoid injuries. There is additional equipment needed for this sport like flags and cones. Unlike American Football, the players have to wear much more gear than Soccer. The players also have to use a uniform. Therefore, football players are required to use football cleats, tight pants, and a jersey that states the player’s name, number, and team identity. Each jersey number categories the position of the player. The jersey needs to be larger in size so it can accommodate the shoulder pads that players use as protection for their upper body. There are other padding that protects the elbows, thighs, hip, tail, and knees. Even the head helmets and face mask which is secured to the head with a chin strap, that offers some head protection have some padding to prevent a concoction. Both sports require a use of a ball; however, the shape differs greatly. The round shaped ball is use in soccer and the oval shaped ball in football. Each ball has significance while playing game. The oval shaped thickness of the ball helps players get a better grip while tossing it to another to score a point. As opposed to, the round ball is kicked around from one player to another to make a…
The NFL and NCAA football have lots of things in common, but I like to lean toward the NFL for being better to watch. The National Football League (NFL) was founded in 1920, and only two teams currently in the NFL is the Decatur Stanleys now the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cardinals now the Arizona Cardinals. College football was founded on November 6, 1869, and it’s played by student athletes. They both have their good and bad with the rules but I love how the NFL rules are played out. It’s a difference how the players are ruled down in the leagues. To be ruled down in the NFL the runner must have been touched any sort of way by the opposing team. In college a player is down whenever any part of his body other than his hands or his feet…
There are many other differences between these sports. For example, in football, the game is a series of plays of short bursts of action; after each play both teams then regroup to prepare for the next play. The difference in Rugby is that the action stops for shorter periods of time, this is because after a player is tackled, the ball is quickly rolled to a teammate, and play resumes. Lastly, Rugby is a more international sport, whereas football is played mostly in the continent of North…
We have teamed up with the AFL to present a photographic exhibition to mark the 2015 Multicultural Round. The exhibition celebrates cultural diversity in Aussie Rules Football.…
Football over the Years Everything changes over time, sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, and others you can’t really tell it has changed at all but in football you can easily tell the changes it has been through over the years. While all sports have changed over the years football seems to have changed the most dramatically from rules, equipment, stadium and even in the way we watch football today. When American football was born it was an all-white sport played with hardly no equipment for protection except for a leather helmet to protect your head, the game was played on hard dirt and as you can expect, injuries were constant and some deaths even occurred from the brutal hits and the missing component of protection equipment.…
Despite the many differences that soccer and football have it is interesting to see all that these sports are also pretty similar but with not many big difference’s in both. A lot of the differences are actually just the amount of protective gear or one sport may have more necessities then the other. Another difference is just simply where the sports are…
I play a sport that’s not very popular. I play rugby. I’ve tried other sports before, but none really interested me as much as rugby. I started playing when I was a freshman at Lakeview high school. Starting at a new school I didn’t know anyone and I thought maybe a sport would help meet some people. I heard about rugby and decided to try it out. Deciding to try rugby was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. One reason rugby is unique is because you have to be flexible and adaptable. It also promotes responsibility, and creates bonds that I just don’t think other sports can.…
Football was putting America in a crisis when the sport first became popular (Majerol 18). Majerol reported that “In 1905, at least 18 high school and college boys died playing the sport, and more than 150 were seriously hurt” (18). Many injuries came because no protective gear was worn and the rules of the game were not strongly enforced (Majerol 18). People had played and gotten injured would suffer from concussions, broken limbs, spines (Majerol 18). The game of football was close to being banned, but former president, Theodore Roosevelt, was a fan of the game and kept football from being outlawed (Majerol 18). By time the 1870s rolled around football had been labeled as a blood sport (Majerol 18). Ordinary roughness in the sport usually…
American football as we know it originated from rugby played in Britain in the mid-19th century. The person who Americans consider the “Father of American Football” is Walter Camp. Professional football can be traced back to 1982, when there was a $500 contract for the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club to play a game against each other. Originally football was primarily a sport of the Midwestern industrial towns in the United State. In 1902, the American Professional Football Association was formed and two years later the National Football League. The competition was fierce between the two leagues, which led the two leagues to merge. Football eventually became national. When the two leagues merged is when…
First of all, the most noticeable difference between these two sports is the parts of the body that are involved in the games. For example, in soccer the players have…
