Making them ideal for this particular type of race. However these two cars have a long history and a bitter rivalry amongst their respective owners.
Both have been fighting for some time for the title of best all wheel drive car. In 2008 and 2009 the Lancer Evolution GSR held on to the crown as top all wheel drive car (Tsuneishi). In 2010 the Lancer Evolution GSR was dethroned by the Impreza WRX STi (Tsuneishi). It seems that every time one car gets bested by the other; the losing car comes back just little better the next year. Which provides the ideal conditions for the constant improvement of both cars, which is a really good thing if you happen to enjoy these amazing machines. Lets analyze these two amazing Japanese cars in a head to head comparison. By reviewing the things that make these cars great. First is the Transmission both come with the preferable manual transmission option. However the EVO is equipped with a five speed manual transmission with over drive while the STi comes with a six speed manual transmission with over drive as well. Next comes the difference in power the EVO produces with its 2.0 engine; 291 horsepower at 6,500 rotations per minuet and 300 foot pounds of torque at 4,000 rotations per minuet. While the STi with its slightly larger 2.5 engine produces; 305 horse power at 6000 rotations per minute and 290 foot pounds of torque at 4000 rotations per minute. Another important factor to performance is weight. The EVO weighs in at 4,542 pounds, and the STi weighed in at 4,475 pounds (Compare). A fun fact is even with two different sized engines both cars have the identical miles per gallon stats. The both go 17 miles to the gallon in the city and 23 miles per gallon on the highway (Compare). However these numbers decrease drastically when being raced in a rally event. Other important performance statistics are that both cars have relatively low top speed at 144 miles per hour.
Another disappointing fact is that they both have unimpressive zero to sixty mile per hour records. The EVO accelerates from a standstill to sixty miles per hour in five seconds and eight tenths of a second. While the Subaru dose it in five seconds and four tenths of a second. An other factor most think as important when deciding which car to purchase is price. The Lancer Evolution GSR will cost you 34,770 dollars (Compare the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR vs. the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.). The price to pay for the Subaru Impreza WRX STi is 34,720 dollars (Compare the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution GSR vs. the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI.). Making the Lancer Evolution GSR fifty dollars more expensive. This miniature difference in the price of the two vehicles dose not makes the choice any easier. It is obvious that their cannot be a long term ruler or champion in the rally car scene because the winner whether it be the STi or the EVO. The losing car will always hunt the champion the next year, and if they follow their usual pattern the loser will rise above the previous year’s winner. In conclusion both cars a relatively inexpensive they both can put much more expensive sports cars to shame on the street or on the track. In the end the best advice for making your decision is to go with your gut and take home the one that just feels
rite.
