“Compensated Dating” is a practice which originated from Japan where older men give money or luxurious gifts to attractive women for their companionship and possibly, sexual favours. The nature of compensated dating, mostly known as “Enjo kōsai” is popular among women ranged from primary school-aged girls to housewives. A common misconception is that it always involves some form of sexual activity.
In recent years, more and more teenagers are getting involved in compensated dating all around the world, especially Hong Kong. People may still ask what compensated dating means. Well a simple answer to that is young women agree to go on dates with men for a fee. Although teenagers deny this, it is a form of teenage prostitution. In the year 2003, there was a 70% rise in the number of teen prostitutes who come from middle to upper-middle class families and have never suffered abuse or mistreatment in Hong Kong which parallels to other countries such as the United States.
Causes
In Hong Kong, many teenagers get involved in compensated dating. Why would this phenomenon occur in Hong Kong? At first, some girls want to satisfy their material desire to buy the brand name products which are expensive. Therefore, they participate in such an activity to gain money. They think that compensated dating is the only way for them to gain money easily. Gaining money is a reason pushing teenagers to join compensated dating. Some adolescents would even feel relaxed and glad when they could buy something they like very much.
On the other hand, some teenagers do not have a clear understanding about compensated dating which is new and exciting to them. They are not aware of the results and the possible negative outcomes of compensated dating. Therefore, some naïve teenagers want to have a try on it.
Moreover, teenagers are pushed to commit into compensated dating also because of the lack of parental care. Parental care is a driving factor because nowadays, parents are busy with work and they do not have enough time to spend quality time with their sons or daughters and give them love and care. When teenagers join compensated dating, they may receive a sense of ‘security’ and think that the men who are dating them are legitimately taking care of them. Teenagers believe that they can gain ‘love’ in compensated dating when parental care is insufficient.

Nowadays, a number of woman believe that it goes without saying for man to pay the check when they go dating, and it’s just as reasonable as the earth encircles around the sun, or the sun will rise from the east every day in women’s mind. In “Who’s Cheap?” Adair Lara’s friend Danny says to her: “As a woman, you are so genetically precious that you deserve attention just because you grace the planet. So, of course, he should buy you drinks. He should also drive the car, open the door, ask you to dance, coax you to bed. And then when you feel properly pampered, you can let out that little whine about how he doesn’t treat you as an equal.” It’s common that at the process of dating, men not only pay the check for common spending, but also follow women and pay for their favors— their individual spending. What’s worse, most of the time, men have to carry a lot of women’s purchases, which is really painful and men have no alternative (In my mind). A lot of women test if men are sincere for them by way of seeing how many times and how much men…

As mentioned before, the process of dating has drastically changed over the past thirty years. One could argue that the respect and value of dating is not exactly what it used to be. In the 1980s, dating would actually involve going on many dates and getting to know a person before committing to an exclusive relationship. In 2013, if a young man is interested in a young woman, he looks at her Facebook profile and follows her Twitter posts. Then after talking for a week or two over text messages, they are in an exclusive relationship. The concept of dating, which can be defined as going out on dates to see if there is a possibility of a relationship, is gone. In present time, once a couple is exclusive they may go to dinner together, see movies, go to a concert, etc., but these activities were not done as a part of the courtship.…
