Competencie and Career Interests Profiler Paper
I was very surprised when I took the Career Profiler; I had taken something like this when I was a senior in high school. In high school my results suggested that I should do something in agriculture, and now 11 years later it suggests that I should do something in Business, Finance or Law. These results were not surprising to me. These are things that I have actually always been interested in. I think that knowing my competencies is really going to help me with my critical thinking in the future. I had never really considered myself someone who thought logically, but according to my results I do. Knowing this will help me to stop second guessing myself whenever I think I am way off from the mark. I already knew that I am a researcher, because I love knowing everything about everything, I love to investigate topics and see where things started. Having this confirmed will give me the confidence to trust my instincts about myself. I have always loved writing and I already use it to my benefit. So researching and writing are competencies that I already knew that I possessed and having them confirmed was nice. I have already used some of the competencies that I knew I had to help me evaluate arguments. Because I love to research and to write I would already use these to my benefit when it came to arguments or discussions. Before I start any kind of argument or discussion with anyone I always make sure that I know what I am talking about. I try to have as much information as possible, so that way when I am faced with a rebuttal, I have factual information. I don’t like entering something without knowing that I have facts to back me up. It is always good to know what you succeed in so you can draw from those strengths and then you can work on your

1Intended for the interview on career interests, I chose Michael Kenneth Brunkhorst, a former teacher of mine. I found him through the University of Central Missouri, UCM, the place where he works. In fact, he started out as a student professor, circa, age 21, his sophomore year. He works as an instructor for the university’s special education department, known as the THRIVE program; a program for those with intellectual disabilities like me.…

By completing the competency assessment it helped me analyzed the result, my strengths are: following instructions, adhering to values, organizing, delivering results, coping with pressure, and cooperating. By appropriately following instructions from others without unnecessarily challenging authority will improve my critical thinking skills. Adhering to values, is another strength of mine. In critical thinking I should not take what I hear or read at face value, but weigh up the evidence and consider the implications and conclusions of what was said. “There is nothing more common than evaluation in the everyday world but for sound evaluation to take place, one must establish relevant standards, gather appropriate evidence, and judge the evidence in keeping with the standards” (Russell, 2013). Part of critical thinking is evaluation, to be able to evaluate an evidence is needed. I am an organized person, I can gather all information needed to evaluate something for critical thinking. Another way in applying my results is through evaluating arguments. Coping with pressure is one of my strength, because this, I should be able to see arguments from different point of views. “Reasoning is generally seen as a means to improve knowledge and make better decisions” (Sperber, 2011).…

American Sign Language (ASL) is almost a completely separate language, other than the words being used. It has its own grammar and word placement. A sentence in ASL usually will not make sense when literally translated. An interpreter must sign the subject before the action. “Talk louder do not” is the way an English speaker would say “Do not talk louder.” Just like a normal language, sign language differs in other countries based on their vernacular. ASL and SEE (Signed Exact English) are used in the United States. Juan Pablo Bonet wrote the first well-known book on the signed alphabet in 1620. In 1760, Deaf education was offered for free in a French school. In 1788, France published the first sign language dictionary. America soon caught on and offered Deaf education as well. Subsequently, the New York Institution for Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb was founded in 1818. Similar schools were created in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia in following years. In the 1850’s, the idea of a Deaf state was proposed to allow other Deaf people to interact within their own “kind” and not having to live up to hearing people’s expectations. It was denied. In 1890, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was founded. The invention of the electrical hearing aid classified some Deaf people as “hard at hearing”. Hearing aids, however, could not fix everyone’s hearing, so President Eisenhower established captioning for the Deaf around 1958. In 1965, the first “ASL Signs and Linguistics Dictionary” was published, and now it is 2013, and I hope to advance sign language further.…

To my surprise, I noticed my Confidence Assessment results were similar to my results on the previous assessment. Four of the five results were the same as four of the results I acquired from the Career Interest Assessment. My results from highest to lowest score are: Family and Community Services, Early Childhood Development Services, Marketing Communications, Professional Support Services, and Teaching and Training Services. I was delighted to find that I am confident in addition to being interested in much of the same career areas.
