During the process of reflective thinking and outcome based information, the groundwork of the committee’s moral and ethical values is laid. Feelings are turned into objective ideas so the family is empowered and emotionally supported. Personal feelings are left outside the door with full respect of patient rights and probable outcome discussed inside. “The process of critical thinking by the nurse is driven by the patient and family” (Chitty & Black, 2011, p.173).…
Critical thinking is imbedded into all aspects of nursing. Critical thinking is an incorporation of the nursing process, problem solving, scientific method, ethics, codes, laws, safety, quality, policies, procedures, and knowledge. Critical thinking is thought that has purpose and is utilized to find meaning in data. In other words, it is how nurses make decisions based on integration of various strategies. When facing a client situation, the nurse must gather data, look at the data, determine the significance of the data, and then determine what to do based on scientific method, ethics, codes, laws, etc. (As listed above) Many attribute critical thinking to common sense, but it is more than that; it is knowledge based decision making and problem solving.…

In a study by Stephanie Pardue (1987) it was concluded that there was a “significant difference in critical thinking ability” according to the educational level of the nurse. Frederickson and Mayer (1977) found that baccalaureate students scored higher on critical thinking than associate degree students. Critical thinking ensures safe nursing practice and a better quality of care. In a…
The purpose of this paper is to explain how registered nurses (RN’s) who have a bachelor’s degree, consume a better understanding of critical thinking skills, evidenced based practice knowledge, and greater leadership concepts. While using the essentials framework of baccalaureate standards, RN to BSN programs are an option that use classes to reflect the essentials for all RN’s to have the same skills in the working practice. Bachelor educated nurses allow for more professional opportunities and greater patient outcomes.…
Abdallah. Ayda Critical Reflection Essay Introduction Within the context of nursing there has been a significant change in nursing in the last two decades, where nursing and medical knowledge has led to changes where patients can no longer stay in hospital and reduction in hospital beds. Professionals who are employed in the healthcare industry are dealing with acutely ill patients who are in more need of care (usher et al 2009). As professionals we must discover the nature that is offered to us by responding and using reflective thoughts to enhance the important aspects in society (Lauder et al 2004). And qualified nurses, acknowledge and understanding is essential for their practice to remain current, continuous improvement in reflecting on our thoughts, and what we do becomes Habitual to our practice (usher et al 2008). It is a necessity for nurses to use critical thinking as it helps gather relevant information to assist practitioners in examining assumptions and identify relationships and patterns (Parker & Clare 2000). We begin this chapter by exploring the concept of critical reflection and why it is important for a nurse, as well as provide an over view of the related legislation that requires the use of reflective thinking in practice by registered nurses, the next section addresses the Gibbs Cycle of what, why and overview of definitions of reflection.…
Nurses will use theories in their practice to help guide them through their daily tasks, patient assessments and also to help make and individualize patient goals and interventions to provide the best care. Nurses study theory as it helps assist the student in building their critical thinking skills. Theories provide a good foundation for clinical practice, improved communication between nurses, better patient care and guidance for research and education. When nurses comprehend and use nursing theory in their practice along with their intuition and compassion, they should become an efficient and strong nurse. All of these traits are important in our daily lives as nurses. Having these theories in place helps nurses to use their critical thinking skills in order to provide our…
As a preschool teacher I support my children’s physical development by playing an indoor game such as leap frog. Where my children stand in a line and the first person in the line ducks down on the knees like a dog and the second child in line leaps over like a frog. The children continue to do this until the first who gets to the finish line. The children enjoy this physical activity very much. This activity is perfect when the weather outside is not so good. When the entire class is playing together and making a good team, is when I know that this activity is a keeper. When the weather is good and sunny outside I love the game tag! This physical activity absolutely promotes energy and gives the children a reason to run with laughter and excitement.…

Advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs) require highly developed and extensive knowledge in “diagnostics, therapeutics, the biological, social and epidemiological sciences and pharmacology, and their enhanced skills in areas such as consultation and clinical decision-making” (Duke, 2012, p.1027). As such, it is imperative that nurses assuming an advance practice role are equipped and capable of applying intricate logic, critical thinking, deliberation, and analysis in their work, evaluations, clinical analysis, and decisions (Duke, 2012). Moreover, the highly specialized clinical experience in combination with the MSN curricula affords undergraduate nurses with the knowledge, nursing theory, leadership, and management principles necessary to meet core competencies required for advance practice. Mandating studies at the Master’s level is not only necessary but is also crucial to the success of undergraduate nurses assuming roles in advance practice.…
The national league for nurses defines critical thinking in the nursing process as “a discipline specific, reflective reasoning process that guides a nurse in generating, implementing, and evaluating approaches for dealing with client care and professional concerns” (Kozier, 2008). This definition is imperative to help a nursing student learn how to think in terms of nursing care. Nursing students must achieve a comprehensive understanding of critical thinking in order to understand the nursing process. The purpose for this paper is for nursing students to learn how to use the nursing process, how to properly document their findings and assessments, and correctly implement APA formatting in a formal paper.…
