Competency statement 6
Competency Standard VI
I maintain being professional on a daily basis by doing the following. Letting all families in my care know we have a confidentiality policy. That we implement each and every day discussing only the info we need to with appropriate staff members. Children and their family's info will only be discussed if we feel abuse or neglect is present. Then we are required to inform the proper authorities. I demonstrate being professional by following my job expectations entailed for my position when I was hired. I always have a positive attitude with my children and families and co-workers daily. I arrive on time and am prepared to start my day promptly. I dress appropriately for my day making sure I have clothes presentable but can engage in messy activities to. I use good judgment when making decisions for the children in my care. I will be an advocate for each child I have by meeting their educational and emotional and physical needs daily. Each child will be treated as an individual. I will also provide a quality educational program to all children in my care to support success for them. If a child shows signs of developmentally delay I will work with the family and any agencies to ensure a bright future for them. I will also take advantage of any opportunities offered to me to continue my own education and growth. Keeping updated on any new laws and regulations plus new teachings and always striving to learn more will make me the best teacher I can be.
I chose to become an early childhood professional because. When I got out of high school I needed a job to pay my bills naturally. But the main reason was because I loved being around children and at the time I didn't have any of my own yet and there were none in my family either. So I thought what a great way to spend the day and get paid was to spend time with other people's kids. In the being it was really hard though. It was not all play time there were rules and regulations to follow.

In order to establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I first begin with providing a clean and organized classroom. All toys and equipment are sanitized on a daily basis, all outlets are covered and all fixtures are mounted to the walls to prevent from tipping over. Upon entering the classroom every parent is required to sign a daily health check in which the teacher and the parent both assess the health of each child. Healthy meals and snacks are provided to each and every child, keeping in mind, the allergies that each child has. Medicines are also carried for each student that requires it on a daily basis. The classroom tables are wiped down and sanitized and the floor is swept after each meal. The children also brush their teeth after meals to help the children gain healthy brushing habits. In a childcare setting the professional has many responsibilities this may include: Working according to the principles of the sector and confidentiality. Some of these principles include working in partnership with the Childs parents/families for example if a certain child has issues going on at home it is your responsibility as the professional to work closely with the child and their parents/families to make sure that you meet the Childs individual needs and follow out any routine in the setting the same way the parent does at home. Another example of this would be confidentiality, maintaining confidentiality is a vital principle when working in a childcare setting. This is due to child protection and keeping a child safe when they are in your care, it means that any information given to you about any child must not be carried out of your setting or spoken about to any unauthorised personnel. If you were to feel as if a child is in danger or feel any concern for a certain child then you should report it to your placement supervisor who will then take the matter further. Another principle when working in a childcare setting would be participating in an environment that is appropiate, welcoming, warm and stimulating. In my setting we do this by displaying a welcome poster with many different languages on it. Also by displaying the children’s work in various different places in the nursery and also displaying photographs of the children carrying out different activities in the nursery. In my setting they also have a designated room for parents to go to if they want to speak to a teacher about anything; it has comfortable seats and is private. As a professional is important to work as part of a team to provide quality service to the child and their parent. This means that if the child has any additional needs that you work closely with the child and parent and also any other professional that may be involved in the child’s routine.…

To promote involvement and positive relationships with families and communities I believe that an open door policy is essential to have. I would do this by talking with the parents every day at drop off and pick up time. During the morning drop off time I would be able to find out how the previous afternoon went, if I wasn't there to see it myself, and how the child slept the previous night. I could also find out whether or not the child ate breakfast. During afternoon pick up time I would be able to tell the parent how the child's day went. I would also keep daily sheets for each child that would include bathroom breaks, what and how much the child ate throughout the day, as well as any concerns or questions I might have about the child. Another way I would keep the open door policy is by sending home a weekly newsletter informing the parents of what would be going on that week in the classroom. I would encourage parents to call the center or stop by to see how things are going for the child. I know that when parents are working they, often times, wonder about the child's day. By calling or stopping by they are able to peek in on the child and get updates are how the day is going. I would also encourage parents to attend any special event that the child is apart of, such as Christmas programs. The parents would, also, be more than welcome to have lunch with the child on his or her birthday if they are available to do so. I believe that, as a teacher, it is important to be the support system for the child while he or she is at school and while the parents are away at work. If the parents are working on something, such as using manners or potty training, I would be more than willing to help them by reinforcing that task while the child is at school. It is very important for both the child and the parents to have consistency in their daily routine. I believe that by…

Professional – Meetings, talking with other parents/members of staff/students/outside agencies. All require professionalism; the way in which you conduct yourself should be with a friendly, but not formal attitude. Respect, listening, interest and understanding should be shown by you in body language, questions, answers and possible solutions. In some of these meetings important issues can irises and it is important that no matter what the subject is you take a high interest at getting any issues dealt with, but always keeping the situation calm and none threatening. Sarcasm, inappropriate jokes and other behaviours should be left to use in your social time; this is not the place for informal attitudes, a professional stance is required, with a level amount of understanding and respect.…
