-Grendel killed 30 men in his first attack, and who knows how many in subsequent attacks. He terrorized the Danes for 12 years, robbing them of Heorot which represented home, royal might, and safety. Finally, he attacked Beowulf and his men with the intent to murder them. Since he murdered dozens of men with no provocation, and showed every indication that he meant to continue doing so, I believe his death was justified.…

Writing was extremely difficult for me when I was younger, mainly because the great ideas I had in my head would not sound so great when I wrote them down on paper. It would sound so perfect to me, yet didn’t make any sense to someone else. Also, I dislike writing for the simple fact that there are a lot of rules to it. Throughout my high school years, I was a poor writer, and it came to my attention in my English 1101 class last year. I failed it the first time, because of not knowing how to get my thoughts to come together without them being all over the place. Retaking that course has really helped me get more focused on my writing skills.…

Poets often use their work to explore the strong emotions that surround relationships and the writers of ‘Sister Maude’, ‘Praise Song for My Mother’ and ‘Nettles’ did this exceptionally well. In my opinion, I consider these poems to be the most inventive as they have used a variety of different techniques in the use of genre and form, that are unique and engaging.…

I am on the boat with my family; myself, parents, brother and sister. Everything that I was taught up until this very moment I had to do on my own. Looking out into the deep, crystal clear ocean water, I know it was finally going to be the “make it or break it” point, the question I was asking myself was am I really doing this?, and thinking over and over again, I have always been deathly afraid of water. Scuba diving….the word running through my mind, all the possibilities of having issues with my air, with my partner, with myself.…

It is not expected that a person would describe something as "fantastic" while attempting to show that they are not fond of that particular thing. The same is true in literature, especially in this excerpt from an untitled nineteenth century novel. Within this excerpt, it is clear that the narrator has negative feelings toward the characters that they are describing and, instead of using more positive language, is upfront with revealing these feelings through their own style. Style here refers to the words that the narrator chooses to use, or diction, as well as the structuring of sentences, otherwise known as syntax. The narrator of this excerpt utilizes both diction and syntax in order to demonstrate that they are disgusted with the actions…

People start learning from the time of birth, they learn to smell, touch and not to mention drink and eat. At a very young age people were taught how to talk, dress themselves and learn their ABC’s. So learning and being educated is a part of life and growing from ever since. Knowing something is the premise of progress. With knowledge comes understanding and reasoning, with understanding comes power. After reading three poems, “Theme for English ‘B’’’ by Langston Hughes, “Crazy Courage” by Alma Luz Villanueva and “Much madness is divinest sense” by Emily Dickinson. I interpreted that, although its three different scenario, they are conveying the same message. People must be more willing to accept change and don’t be afraid to show their individuality despite if it’s acceptable or not.…
