The New Periodic Table Dmitri Mendeleev created the periodic table on March 6, 1869 (almost 100 years, to the day, before my birthdayJ) based on the atomic weights of the elements. Many elements were missing then, but he left spaces for them because he thought one day they might be discovered. Now the periodic table is arranged by the element’s atomic number and many other trends from it can provide valuable information to scientists. When information is arranged in a certain order it is called periodicity. Your assignment is to create your own periodic table using periodicity and similar trends as found in the modern periodic table. Your new periodic table must consist of everyday items attached to a small poster board for display. These everyday items must portray at least one of the trends found within a group or period of the periodic table. Your periodic table project is due: ______________. Every student will turn in their own periodic table and all work must be completed outside of class. You may cut pictures out of catalogs, magazines, use objects, glue things to the table, whatever it takes for creativity. You will need to create families with characteristics in common.

Your periodic table needs to make sense.

You need to include periodicity in your families. In other words, they need to change as you go down within the families.
Hydrogen needs to have one thing in common with the Alkali Metal family, but also be different from the Alkalis.
