There are three stories that I loved in particular during this quarter. The Things They Carried, A Roman Incident, and A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings. These three stories carried a lot of emotion and excitement. They all have different plots and backgrounds, but for the most part, there are so much in common between these three stories in a psychological, socio/political, spiritual, queer, and feminist lens. Besides those examples, the one thing that connects these three the most is that the reader can find love in all of the stories.…

Chapter four starts out with an anecdote explaining how Malala’s grandfather did not help out financially with her Woma celebration because she was a girl, not a boy. (Woma being a traditional celebration on the seventh day of a child's life.) Throughout the chapter she starts to notice and disagree with the divide between how women and men are treated, especially in rural areas, such as her family's village. When Malala goes to the village, all of the women cook food for the men and take care of children, that's all anyone believes they are good for. “My mother and I stayed in the women's quarters downstairs.…

There is a certain pain that is felt whenever a loved one passes. Beyond sadness, it is hurt, it is anger, it is confusion, and an almost unidentifiable emptiness where the lungs should be. People who have not experienced such loss have a happy, if hazy, view of the world. Then, there are those who lose someone… a major someone... so very special. They do eventually move on, but the pain alters them forever. Ed Sheeran, in the song “Afire Love,” illustrates how the loss of an individual can impact everyone around them, young and old.…

We start the chapter with a description of Parry through Jed “No longer the Indian brave, despite the pony-tail”. McEwan really sets the scene with this as it gives us a clear picture of how Parry actually is. Shortly afterwards Jed’s scientific side comes out as he starts to re-assure himself that Parry is really harmless and that is was the accident that clouded his judgement. We feel a sense of relief as we now are told Parry is not threat as he is a “harmless fellow with a strange notion”.…

The use of critical thinking is imperative when trying to persuade others. One must effectively use the three types of appeals in order to be successful. I have noticed how Danielle Crittenden and Judy Brady have used the three appeals in their essays “About Love” and “I Want a Wife.” Crittenden and Brady’s use of tone greatly effects how the audience perceives their writing.…

The difference between two separate opinions of love could be very similar, yet could be drastically contrasting. In the story "Love in L.A.", written by Dagoberto Gilb, Jake has, what would appear to a normal person, a skewed vision of love. Out of everything in his world he could chose to love, it is his car that he loves. His car means everything to him and it seems as if nothing else matters. In the story "The Love of My Life", by T.C. Boyle, two teenagers seem to love each other so passionately that they are willing to risk the life of their own child to keep, what they consider in their eyes, a perfect life. Like Jake in “Love in L.A.” and the teenagers in “The Love of My Life”, people’s view on love can sway…
