Howard Shore was born in Canada, October 18th, 1946. After studying music at Boston's Berklee College of Music, Shore started a music group called Lighthouse. He toured and recorded with them from 1969 to 1972. In 1975, after his run with Lighthouse, Shore became the Music Director at Saturday Night Live. Sometimes, if you look closely, you could see him performing in some of the sketches.

His trademark when writing his pieces are usually dark and ominous, composing music for Silence of the Lambs, LOTR, Hugo and the Twilight series. All of these scores have very deep, moving sounds. Howard Shore’s career started out on the set of Saturday Night Live. There he started composing music for movies but he was never really noticed. It was only after he teamed up with David Cronenberg that his music began catching the attention of colleagues and audience members. This amazing tag team/ partnership between composer and director with Cronenberg produced film scores to twelve of his movies including The Fly, Naked Lunch and Eastern Promises.

During the 80’s and 90’s, Howard Shore spent a lot of time composing for more films. Shore's career and reputation catapulted to high levels after the turn of the new century. Then, starting in 2000, Howard

“On the Waterfront” is a masterpiece film about a union man (Terry Malloy) whom makes an attempt to stand up to the corrupt mob bosses leading the Longshoremen’s Union. Just as important as the plot of the film is the music; the original score by Leonard Bernstein greatly influenced how other composers would approach film scoring. Bernstein combined the “American” characteristics of Aaron Copland’s music (disjunct melodies, wide intervals, small but colorful ensembles) with the dark and somewhat disturbing elements of modernism. Bernstein did not shy away from dissonance, and he also incorporated jazz elements (such as brass and rhythmic syncopation) into the equation.…

"Awakenings" on the other hand starred Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams, two well-known and respected actors. This is obviously a step up for Penny Marshall. "Big" was a lighthearted comedy and "Awakenings" was an emotional drama. Penny Marshall shifted her level of intensity for this film. As was mentioned before Marshall tended to direct and produce comedies and this drama was a paradigm shift for her that worked out very well with critics. There does not seem to be any pattern of collaboration with other artists within her films. A different composer writes each music score and her films each have their own unique cast of actors (with exception to Tom Hanks in "A League of their Own") and actresses. Her ideology displayed in each film is different; there are differences in point of view between "Big", <br><br>"Awakenings", "Jumpin' Jack Flash" etc. As there exists differences in each film there exists a difference in success with audiences and…

His ability to write so many different styles of music, from Schindler's List to Indiana Jones, is a skill I which greatly inspires me, as well as his flair for conveying a particular theme; particularly in E.T, where his music depicts the childlike innocence of the film. He is a chameleon of sorts and his seemingly effortless approach to composing exquisite pieces of music for completely different genres makes him stand out amongst other notable musicians of our modern culture. He also takes a lot of inspiration from composers such as Richard Strauss and Wagner, and it is evident in the style of some of his work that he admires the grand, symphonic scores and neoromatic style of Golden Age composers Max Steiner and Erich Wolfgang…

Henry Purcell offered us sadness with minor keys and happiness with major keys. I really do not have much experience nor really understand keys but, I think Purcell’s uses of the minor and major keys makes since because minor means low and unimportant and that is how you feel when ever you are sad. While, major stands for important and significant and when the feeling of happiness domains your spirit, you feel on top of the world. I think it was very effective his technique of key usage to make the audience feel sad or happy. If you hear a low key you feel depress, low energy, and sad and when you hear a major key blasting thru the auditorium I am sure it inspires you, put you in a happy mood.…

His scores have been essential in promoting the fine art of film music composition. A huge knowledge of music history and the structure has enabled him to create a wide variety of moods in the films he has scored. At the same time, though, he has been criticized by film music experts for the lack of impressiveness, thematically influential scores in the later stages of his career. Goldsmith's willingness to take on such projects as Mom and Dad Save the World and Dennis the Menace isolated many of those who were his closest fans in the days of The Wind and the Lion and Chinatown, but enlightened an entirely new generation of film music fans.…

Music in which one tone predominates over the other tones is called tonal. Iteration is an important means of causing one tone to predominate over other tones. Harmony associated with tonal music is called tonal harmony. Within the limits of this study tonal harmony will mean harmony based upon major and minor scales.…
