During the latter part of the nineteenth century, presumably around the 1890's, it became known as the Progressive Era, a time of change, reform, and adaptation. As Vernon L. Parrignton put it, it was a "democratic renaissance" (Vernon L. Parrington in The Progressive Movement: Liberal or Conservative). So what was Progressivism? Well, its main goals were to curb corporate power, to end business monopolies, and to wipe out political corruption. They also wanted to democratize electoral procedures, protect working people, and bridge the gap between social classes. They called for reforms such as the referendum, initiative, and the recall. They wanted the Americanization of the immigrant and the regulation of child and woman labor. But many historians argue what the main idea was behind the Progressive Movement; whether it was to help democratize the nation, or was just a cover up for a group of well-to-do-middle-class people who wanted to climb back up the social ladder and reassert its declining position of leadership. Although it had its many failures, and there were many reasons to believe it as a conservative movement, the Progressive Movement was in fact a liberal movement.…

An unemployed person may think that because he or she can’t find work that it is his or her problem alone. Instead it can be seen as a social issue if many thousands of people in society are also unemployed and struggling to find work. The approach which should also be taken when dealing with a complex issue such as unemployment is that the stereotypes about the issue should be discarded because…

Unemployment is caused by structural, cyclical, and frictional. Structural unemployment changes the basic composition of the economy. They mismatch between the jobs that’s available in the market, and the skills of the available workers in the market. Structural unemployment people usually have skills that are not needed in the market. It’s a type of unemployment that occurs to workers who are displaced by a change in marketplace needs. Cyclical unemployment increases during a recession, and also decreases during an expansion. For example, auto worker maybe laid fewer cars. They will lose valuable employees that have put in lots of time, have the will to work, and have the risk in their health for the company. Therefore, these type of employers avoid the presents of other organization, and government officials. Frictional unemployment is simply the opportunity cost of looking for a new job. It is also considered to be a big part of the natural rate of unemployment. Although, it is thought of as a voluntary leave it can also be, because of layoff or termination with cause. Often employers have a hard time to find qualified candidates. In the business cycle, workers feel more confident to quit their job, and in search of better one, thus increasing frictional unemployment. I believe we need to change the type of statistics used in the media to measure the health of the labor market. By replacing the unemployment rate with two figures is: Total Hours Worked and Total Wage Dollars Earned, we can get a better feel for the health of the economy.…

One sociological perspective on unemployment can be taken from the famous Functionalist Theory. Functionalists believe everything serves a specific function in our society and these functions need to be understood (Kendall 23). The theorist behind functionalism is Durkheim. Durkheim’s concern was how to preserve society. The basis for social order was not economic, but rather moral. In a functionalist society, everyone has a role and a purpose. In order for this theory to be successful, the individuals in a…
