Composition: Essay on Basket Ball as a Favorite Sport and Writing a Complaint Letter
Penn Foster The Writing Process Part 2

1. Write a composition using one of the topics listed below. Your composition should be three to five paragraphs long. It should contain an introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
b. Explain why a certain sport is your favorite.

My favorite sport, both as a participant and a spectator, is basketball. The game is fun to play and exciting to watch. It is a great sport for almost all ages and for both sexes. Even though the game originated just over 100 years ago, people worldwide now enjoy it.

When playing basketball, you get a great workout, while having a lot of fun. This sport is fast-paced and exciting; the action is almost non-stop. There is little equipment required, and you can have a game with as few as six, four, or even two players. The rules of the game are relatively simple and easy to learn, although the strategy of basketball can be quite involved and challenging. As your skills and understanding of the game improve, you come to enjoy the game more and more.

I love watching basketball, especially college games. It seems that the intensity and competitiveness of basketball at the college level is unparalleled. I especially like watching the national collegiate tournament every year in March. My friends and I gather to watch the games together and fill out „brackets” where we predict the winners of each game. This adds to the excitement of watching the tournament, as we see who is able to select the most winners. I remember first watching this tournament when I was only eight years old, and have watched it every year since. I think it is the most exciting event in all of sports.

Basketball is perhaps the one sport in which women excel at a level that is comparable to men. In the last twenty years or so, the popularity of women’s basketball has reached a level almost equal to that of the men’s game. It is one sport that women play by rules and regulations that are almost identical to those used by men. There is even a popular professional league for women. Basketball now affords many women the opportunity for a college scholarship and even the possibility of a professional career in the sport.

As either a participant or a spectator, basketball is great fun and entertainment. Whether it’s playing in a „pick-up” game at the playground or watching a big game with 20,000 people in a huge arena, basketball is great fun. The popularity of the sports seems to grow each year, and I think I will be a fan for life!

2. Write a letter of complaint. Follow the rules for a business letter, and use the full-block style. The complaint may be about anything you wish (such as malfunctioning equipment, poor building maintenance, or disruptive noises from a nearby office). You can base your letter on a true experience, or you can make up all the details you need.

Dear Sir or Madam:

I have recently ordered a refurbished Pantech Slate camera phone (item #89642951) from your website on October 3. I received the phone on November 3. The phone worked fine for ten days, but then it began to freeze at the startup screen. It then would not turn off and I had to remove the battery. The phone has not been dropped, nor has it gotten wet. The battery is fully charged. This item carries a 30-day warranty, with the option for a refund or exchange. My order number is B78468156.

To resolve this problem, I would simply like an exchange of this phone for another of same brand and model. I have ordered twice from you in the past and have had no problems with the merchandise. I understand that such a problem as this sometimes occurs with refurbished electronics. I look forward to hearing from you concerning the exchange. You can me at (555) 555-5555 or your e-mail address.

Sincerely,
Mike Kania

Truer to the game by Randy Horick is a short story, possibly an excerpt from something larger, about how women’s basketball more clearly reflects the essence of the game. He claims that for a multitude of reasons that I will discuss later in this, that women’s collegiate basketball and the WNBA are representative of the true nature of the sport. More shots from behind the 3-point line, less fouls, plays that happen at a speed you can understand, and more behind the scenes stuff is what differentiates men and women’s. He cites pressure to win as his main argument for the cause of the differences in the two. This pressure to win creates an environment of hostility; athletes only play at the collegiate level for a few short years, not earning…

I have many hobbies, but I like basketball the most. Basketball is like my best friend. The first time I played it, I felt interested. I was so interested in playing basketball after watching my brother play, however, I started learning when I was 9 years old. So I kept doing it. Even if I didn't win, my coaches alway said "You can't win, unless you learn how to lose." When I was in 5th grade my brother inspired me to do that. I…

A fundamental factor in American culture and the development of many crucial life skills, sports have historically excluded women, pushing them to watch from the sidelines rather than partake in them. It is not only important for women to experience the sports lifestyle, but also for society as a whole to have its entire population participating in a common activity, thus breaking away from the archaic norm.…

The history of the game of basketball is unique to other sports. Instead of the game gradually developing into a sport over time, the invention of basketball was immediate. In eighteen-ninety-one, when a local YMCA gave him the task of creating a game for students, James Naismith designed a game he named “basketball”. From there, the game quickly grew into a national and worldwide phenomenon. Only forty-five years later, in nineteen-thirty-six, basketball was introduced to the Olympics games. Founded in nineteen-forty-nine, the National Basketball Association, a collection of professional men’s teams, became the nation’s hallmark league. Finally, the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) was created in nineteen-ninety-six. Now, basketball…

It wasn’t until the year 1893 when Sendra Berenson introduced the world to women’s basketball. When the women were playing a game no male spectators were allowed there at the time. In 1896 a game played between Stanford and California was the first women’s intercollegiate game. In that same year a game played in Illinois was the first intercollegiate women’s high school game to be recognized. It wasn’t until 1971 that women were finally allowed to play basketball on a full court, but in the state Oklahoma, women’s high school leveled basketball wasn’t allowed to play full court until 24 years later in 1995. In 1936, the Amateur Athletic Union held the first women’s national championship and the first women’s world championship was held by FIBA in 1969. But, the best change that ever happened in all women’s sports was when the Title IX took place in 1972. This equalized men’s an women’s sports (Tactics…
