Composition Of Cathydrates Lab Report
LAB 12
PERCENTAGE COMPOSITION OF HYDRATES

Pre-Lab Questions:
See page(s) 1 for calculations

Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to learn how to determine the percent of water in a hydrate.

Materials:
Evaporating dish Ring stand
Wire gauze Burner
Crucible tongs Triple beam balance
Copper(II) sulfate penta-hydrate Spatula
Glass stirring rod Distilled water

Procedures:
See page(s) 1 and 2, for procedure steps 1-11

Observations and Data:
1. Mass of evaporating dish 21.48g
2. Mass of dish + hydrate 23.48g
3. Mass of dish + anhydrous salt 22.75g

Calculations:
See page(s) 3 and 4, for questions 1- 5

Questions for Discussion:
1. Sources of error in this lab could be caused by measuring the wrong amount of chemicals with the spatula, having left over water in the evaporating dish from not heating it well enough to evaporate all the water and reading the triple beam balance wrong or not knowing for to use a triple beam balance. You can prevent these types of mistakes by double checking your work and reading the directions carefully.

To calculate the percent composition of a component in a compound you have to find the molar mass of the compound by adding up the masses of each atom in the compound using the periodic table or a molecular mass calculator.

A hydrate was given to our group and the identity of the hydrate was unknown. The lab workers were told to determine the identity of the unknown hydrate. The identity of the hydrate could be determined by calculating the hydrate’s percent of water. So the lab workers set out to determine the water percent of the unknown hydrate.…

The mass percent of water was determined using the mass of water and dividing it by the total mass of the hydrate and then multiplying that answer by 100%. The number of moles of water in a hydrate was determined by taking the mass of the water released and dividing it by the molar mass of water. The number of moles of water and the number of moles of the hydrate was used to calculate the ratio of moles of water to moles of the sample. This ratio was then used to write the new and balanced equation of the dehydration process. The sample was then rehydrated to the original state and the percent of the hydrate recovered was calculated by using the mass of the rehydrated sample by the mass of the original hydrate and then multiplied by 100%.…

The lab was carried out with numerous steps. First, one had to safely prepare by putting on goggles. One then had to wash and heat the dish with the flame for about three minutes. After allowing the dish to cool, one had to weigh the evaporating dish and record the weight. Two to three grams of copper sulfate hydrate was then added to the dish and weighed. One then heated the dish until the copper sulfate hydrate’s blue color became an off-white color. After the dish cooled, one took the mass of the dish and recorded it. One then cleaned up the lab table and had their data sheet signed.…

There are several factors that could cause errors to occur while performing this experiment. For instance, most errors come from heating the sample too fast. A heating rate of 1 to 2 degrees per minute is will give good results. If you go any faster than five degrees per minute it will probably yield you poor results. Too much or too little…
