Mr. K. was diagnosed as having an acute cerebral vascular accident. This disorder can also be described as a “stroke”. It occurs when there is an interruption of normal blood flow in one or more of the blood vessels that supply the brain. Thrombosis, embolism, and hemorrhage are the primary causes of a CVA. (Sommers and Johnson 2002) The tissues of the brain become ischemic, leading to hypoxia or anoxia with destruction or necrosis of the neurons, glia, and vasculature. Complications of CVA include unstable blood pressure, sensory and motor impairment, infection, pneumonia, contractures, and pulmonary emboli. CVA is the third leading cause of death in the United States and affects more than 500,000 Americans annually. (Sommers and Johnson 2002)…

The most common type of stroke is ischemic, which refers to the loss of oxygen and nutrients for brain cells that occurs because the blood supply to a portion of the brain has been cut off. Ischemic strokes account for approximately 80% of all strokes, and can be further broken down into two subtypes: thrombotic, also called cerebral thrombosis, and embolic, also termed cerebral embolism.…

Early admission to hospital followed by correct diagnosis with minimum delay is a prerequisite for successful intervention in acute stroke. The need to seek medical or other attention promptly after stroke onset, to use an ambulance with direct transportation to the acute-care hospital, and to have more effective in-hospital organization will be required for effective acute treatment options to be available to stroke patients. There are a couple of legal and ethical issues of this case.…

Computed-tomography scan (CT) is a series of x-ray images taken from different angles, which are combined by a computer, into a representation of a slice through the body. CT scan images provide more detailed information than X-rays do. A CT scan has many uses, but is primarily used to quickly examine people who may have internal injuries from car accidents or other types of trauma. A CT scan can also be used to visualize many parts of the body and is used to diagnose disease or injury as well as to plan medical, surgical or radiation treatment. A brain CT is used to evaluate various structures of the brain to look for a mass, stroke, area of bleeding, or blood vessel abnormality. It is also sometimes used to look at the skull. CT scans have…

Throughout high school, I’ve immersed myself in many extracurricular activities and courses that I love that helped shape who I am. I mainly participated in intensive academic courses involving advanced or AP credits as well as many different volunteering opportunities which resulted in a tight schedule. In the beginning of senior year, it was difficult for me to juggle because I also started my first job. With the help of my sister, who recently graduated Physical Therapy school, I was able to create a schedule that helped relieve my stress without having to give up any of my activities I genuinely enjoyed. My sister helped me create a time allotment for my schoolwork, volunteering, and college applications. She and I are very similar in the sense that we are both determined when we set our sights on what we want. She knew exactly what she wanted to be at the start of high school and worked hard to accomplish her goal. She inspired me to also partake in a medical science as my career due to my love for science and helping others. At first, it was challenging deciding what career path I wanted to follow because I don’t like blood or needles, which eliminated many of my options. I finally decided that I want to pursue a career as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, which is a person who implements sound waves to produce images such as ultrasounds.…

Modern medical technology allows physicians to capture detailed images of the body for diagnosing and treatment planning of various health issues. Radiologists use imaging technologies to diagnose or treat diseases. Interventional radiology is the performance of medical procedures with the guidance of imaging technologies. Acquisition of medical imaging is usually performed by a radiologic technologist and the results are interpreted by Radiologists, medical doctors that specialize in radiology. While Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography Scan (CT) are useful for diagnosing and treating illnesses, each has their own health risks and benefits.…

In a rapidly developing electronic environment, the expectations for nurses to provide the highest quality of service whilst delivering the best possible patient care have widened considerably. The Department of Health (DH) (2000) stipulates that clinical effectiveness should be combined with a patient-centred approach, with evidence-based practice (EBP) forming the backbone of nursing care (Fitzpatrick, 2007).…

One of the gap is fewer studies on younger population. Most of the studies have been done in older population. Various factors are different in these two population due to age, stress level, sleep quality, exposure to environment, living habits, culture and food. The study done in younger population has shown there has been increased incidence of stroke in youth which has a negative impact on quality of life, work and finance. This also leads to more issues in older age especially related to health and in turn finance. There is less compliance in this group and lead to more stroke incidence in older stages of life. The younger population study has shown that there is a dire need of further research for better understanding of different risks associated with strokes at such early stage of life as well as its long term impact in older age. This would help in diagnosis, treatment of stroke and especially prevention at earlier stages of…

Computed Tomography (CT) scan involves the use of x-rays, a form of ionizing radiation, CT scan is used to detect and diagnose the presence and recurrence of tumors in human body and also provides the stage of a cancer. Several case studies have shown that CT scan can be effective in both colorectal cancer and lung cancer screening. Exposure to ionizing radiation is caused to increase the risk of cancer. Children may be at higher risk because usually children are more sensitive to radiation than adults and have a longer life expectancy. Women also at a somewhat higher risk than men of developing cancer by receiving the same radiation exposures at the same age. Low Dose CT scan has been introduced for minimizing the radiation effects as high…

The basic idea of the Multi-slice Computed Tomography (MSCT) is to widen the x-ray source with several detectors in rows so that the data can be gathered of more than a slice a time thus reduces the time of scanning. From the first establishment till this day, the MSCT systems had change in so many aspects. The advancements of the systems are to fulfill the medical needs and had brings a lot of convenience to the clinical fields. By producing the 3D image, the MSCT give a great help in diagnosis of new clinical applications such as heart and vascular CT application, orthopedics and trauma imaging, comprehensive brain and stroke assessment and many more. From this assignment, the topics that would be discusses regarding the…
