computer have made the world a global village
COMPUTER HAS MADE THE WORLD A GLOBAL VILLAGE IN THE SENSE THAT.
FIRST OF ALL WE DEFINE WHAT COMPUTER IS ALL ABOUT
What is a Computer?
A computer is a programmable machine. The two principal characteristics of a computer are: it responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner and it can execute a prerecorded list of instructions (a program).
Global Village is a term closely associated with Marshall McLuhan, popularized in his books The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man (1962) and Understanding Media (1964). McLuhan described how the globe has been contracted into a village by electric technology[ and the instantaneous movement of information from every quarter to every point at the same time In bringing all social and political functions together in a sudden implosion, electric speed heightened human awareness of responsibility to an intense degree.
Marshall McLuhan predicted the Internet as an "extension of consciousness" in The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man thirty years before its commercialization.
The next medium, whatever it is - it may be the extension of consciousness - will include television as its content, not as its environment, and will transform television into an art form. A computer as a research and communication instrument could enhance retrieval, obsolesce mass library organization, retrieve the individual's encyclopedic function and flip into a private line to speedily tailored data of a saleable kind
Today, the term "Global Village" can be used to describe the Internet and World Wide Web.[citation needed] On the Internet, physical distance is even less of a hindrance to the real-time communicative activities of people, and therefore social spheres are greatly expanded by the openness of the web and the ease at which people can search for online communities and interact with others who share the same interests and concerns. Therefore, this technology fosters the idea of a conglomerate yet unified global community. According to McLuhan, the enhanced "electric speed in bringing all social and political functions together in a sudden implosion has heightened human awareness of responsibility to an intense degreeIncreased speed of communication and the ability of people to read about, spread, and react to global news quickly, forces us to become more involved with one another from various social groups and countries around the world and to be more aware of our global responsibilities. Similarly, web-connected computers enable people to link their web sites together. This new reality has implications for forming new sociological structures within the context of culture.
Notes and references
1. Jump up ^ Wyndham Lewis's America and Cosmic Man (1948) and James Joyce's Finnegans Wake are sometimes credited as the source of the phrase, but neither used the words "Global Village" specifically. According to McLuhan's son Eric McLuhan, his father, a Joyce scholar and a close friend of Lewis, likely discussed the concept with Lewis during their association, but there is no evidence that he got the idea or the phrasing from either; McLuhan is generally credited as having coined the term. In Shakespeare’s time, new words were created, giving people new ways of expressing themselves. In 1903, the Wright brothers successfully flew the first working airplane, giving people the possibility to fly. But perhaps our most ingenious inventions are that of the computer and the internet. These now key components to daily life are constantly throwing advertisements at us, ever assessing what our likes and dislikes are, and constantly giving more and more of our “private information” to big corporations. In ‘Feed’, the novel by M.T. Anderson, we are taken a step towards our possible future, where computers have become so integral to our society that they are now implanted in our heads, connected to our brains. This is called the feed. While this seems like a wonderful innovation, Anderson reveals the detriment all this new technology is causing our society. The feed, and inventions like it, are causing the collapse of our culture, the dilution of our language, and the complete destruction of our environment.…

According to Nicholas Carr in his book The Shallows, the Net is changing the way people view and live their everyday lives, and is the single most powerful mind-altering technology that has ever come into general use since the book. One can agree with Carr’s thesis because it is easily supported by observing the changing culture of humanity. Due to rapidly advancing and expanding technology, human beings are dealing with memory issues and diminishing human interaction. The Net is changing the way people view and live their everyday lives, and is the single most powerful mind-altering technology that has ever come into general use since the book. People view technology as computers and phones but it is a widespread of so much more.…

The global village is vastly evident throughout all of society, moreso than ever before. As a result of the formation of this global village, there has been many consequences for society. With the rising coexistence of local and global communities, local society is adapting to suit the needs of the global village. Hence, there is a battle between the individual and the power of globalisation, as the world is becoming more connected. Rob Sitch’s 1997 film, ‘The Castle’, portrays the effects of the global village through the juxtaposition of the Kerrigan family to the Barlow group, a transnational corporation. The global village concept is also portrayed in CBC TV’s 1960 interview with Marshall McLuhan, ‘The World is a Global Village’. Throughout these two texts, it is clearly evident that the global village has become an intrinsic part of society.…

In the Frontline video titled Digital Nation, Rachel Dretzin and Douglas Rushkoff explored the impact of digital media on today’s society. In the video they cover everything from it’s impact on the brain, to it’s impact on students, to it’s impact on the military. Nothing is spared in this investigation on the effect of digital media, and growing up in a wired world. However the main thing I managed to take away from this film was it has had a dramatic effect on human abilities and communication, which I will be discussing in the following paragraphs.…

Globalisation refers to the fact that we all increasingly live in one world, so that we become more interdependent in areas political, economic, financial, cultural, and social, with productivity and international distribution of labour (Giddens, A 2009). It was stimulated by the analyses of global media by Marshall McLuhan, who coined the term 'Global Village'. The dynamics of globalisation have made the world grow smaller and countries have become increasingly interlinked. Its dimensions operate at both the global level and local level at the same time. The use of satellite…
