• Software (program) consists of a series of related instructions, organized for a common purpose, that tells the computer what tasks to perform and how to perform them. • How does user interact with software?

Two (2) Categories of Software
• System Software o consists of the programs that control or maintain the operations of the computer and its devices. o serves as the interface between the user, the application software, and the computer’s hardware. o Two types of system software :  Operating system  Utility Program • Application Software o consists of programs designed to make users more productive and/or assist them with personal tasks.

What is an operating system (platform)?
• Operating system is a set of programs containing instructions that work together to coordinate all the activities among computer hardware resources. • Many of the first operating systems were device dependent and proprietary. o A device dependent program is one that runs only on a specific type or make of computer. o Proprietary software is privately owned and limited to a specific vendor or computer model.

What is an operating system (platform)?
• Today’s trend : towards device-independent operating systems that run on computers provided by a variety of manufacturers.  The advantage of device independent operating systems is user can retain existing application software and data files even if they change computer models or vendors
