CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPUTER
The computer is often described as an electronic machine that accepts data and process the data into information. This is to say that the computer has means of accepting data from the user and work on those data to come out with information as directed by the user. The computer is electronics. That is to say to some large extent, it behaves like other electronics. It needs power supply; it needs periodic servicing, etc.
PARTS OF THE COMPUTER
The computer is a system. That is to say, it is made up of different parts or devices that work together. These parts or devices are interrelated and functions together. These include a. The Monitor or Visual Display Unit: This is the part that contains the screen where we see what we are doing on the computer. The monitor looks like a television and can display anything from texts, graphics and video clips. The monitor contains buttons that can be used to adjust its brightness, its intensity, and to adjust the positions of the screen.
b. The mouse: The mouse is the part of the computer that is used to select items on the screen. The mouse is also used to move the cursor across or around the screen. There are three ways to click the mouse. Left click (pressing the left button on the mouse), right click (pressing the right button) or double click (pressing the left button two times very fast). Left click is the normal clicking used to highlight or select an item. Right clicking is used mainly to display a menu or list of tasks associated with an item. When you right click on an item, a drop down menu appears that gives you the list of tasks associated with that item. c. The keyboard: The keyboard is used to send data into the computer. It is an input device. It contains keys that are pressed to send data into the system. The
