a. Literacy:
Before this class I simply thought that literacy was the ability a person has to read and write, however, now I know that there is more to literacy. I was able to better understand the meaning of literacy from the articles that we read in class. For example, Ivanic explains that literacy is obtained from our own experiences and beliefs, Gee shows that literacy is influenced by our social context, Flower teaches that literate acts results from a person connecting meaning to the activity or event, and lastly, Conivo describes literacy as an important process that has the potential to break or build a person’s spirit up.

Literacy is a process that people need to understand which is influenced by their social context. Therefore, it has the potential to break or build a person’s spirit. People need to realize that they are the ones who can make a meaning out of an activity that they participate in, because literacy is achieved through our own beliefs and prior experiences.

When I sit down to write a paper, I first do more research on the topic that I am interested with, then I think of the ways that I want to represent it. Then I would make an outline which has an introduction, body, and conclusion. After making the outline, I would try to specify who my audience is, what genre I need to be writing for, and state the purpose of my essay.
