The United States Constitution declares that freedom is a right of every American citizen - whether it is to speak freely, to assemble, to petition the government, to practice any religion or none at all, or to bear arms - all without a fear of prosecution. Despite the fact that the Constitution explains what kinds of freedom Americans have, freedom is a vague concept that everyone interprets according to her or his perspective. For instance, some people believe that freedom means to be debt-free. Others would say that simply being able to plan for the future is freedom. These immigrants, who illegally entered this great country in search of a better tomorrow, constantly live in a state of anxiety and uncertainty because they do not know if even a simple traffic violation can start the deportation process and send them back to the country from which they tried so hard to escape. They are always looking over their shoulder, not knowing what will happen next. This prevents them from planning for the future of their families, which may include buying a house, getting an education, or having a steady job. Attaining a legal immigration status is a very long and challenging process, but it will grant them the freedom to work, study, travel, and pursue greater goals in life. But most importantly, it will give them the ability to be together with their family.
These are just two examples describing freedom. Ultimately, the definition of freedom varies from person to person based on their background, culture, education. However, freedom is not a static idea. This concept changes within the same individual as he or she accumulates life experiences.
