In the beginning of the concert before the band started to play, two musicians appeared on stage. They started to tune and warm up their instruments; a woman playing an oboe and a man playing a saxophone. When the concert was about to start the rest of the band came on stage and everyone took their places. The members of the Navy Band were dressed with their white uniforms. Some members wore the officer dress uniform which consisted of white clothes and turtle neck with a white cover, while others wore the enlisted dress uniform, which consisted of white clothes and a black tie with a white cover. The concert etiquette was informal.
The concert opened suddenly with a high chord of the clarinets and then with the sound of flutes. This remind me the class were we studied the pitch: the highness or lowness of sound. …show more content…
Suddenly, everything stopped and a man onstage introduced the director of the band: The Lieutenant Scott. The director gave a little speech where he gave some details of his life and described himself as a “true Texan”.
The first piece played was homophonic. The band played all the instruments at the same time. After this, when the composition was over, we the public, stood up to sing the National Anthem of United States. The second work played particularly made me feel happy. This piece was unique. The third movement began softly. It was a composition played by the saxophone quartet. Each member started to play one at a time. The piece changed its style as it progressed. It turned into a jazz style. Before the break of the concert the Navy Band Southeast’s Brass Quintet, Windward Brass played a piece called “Escape”. This particular song made me feel like if I were alone in the world.
After the break, the concert hall changed completely its style.
A popular music group of 8 members started to play rock songs. In contrast to the instrument used earlier, they played the electric guitar. I noticed that during all this song the lights of the roof were changing from blue to red color. What I liked most from the rock part was the solo saxophone because the man playing this instrument really got inspired and I was able to notice his enthusiasm. Once this was over the band came once again to stage. They started to play compositions from Frank Sinatra. The compositions I liked the best were “America the Beautiful” written by Katharine Lee Bates and the music composed by Samuel A. Ward and “New York” from Frank Sinatra. I liked “America the Beautiful” because it is a patriotic song. I liked the way the song describes all the natural beauty of a whole country, but mostly, I liked the melody of the piece. From “New York” I liked the melody and the changes of texture. I believe I like this pieces more than the rest just because I had previous knowledge of them. I haven’t heard from their composers but I did heard the pieces
before.
A thing I will remember for a long time is the moment when they honored people who had served America. I was touched and surprised by this last part. It was a very important and beautiful moment of the concert. At the end of the concert, the band played its last composition where they used a piccolo. In class we learn about the woodwind instruments, which one of those instruments was actually the piccolo who came from the flute family. This ending piece made me feel like if I was in a carnival due to it rhythm. Overall I liked all the pieces. Each one was beautiful on it very own way. I liked that the pieces played were of different styles such as classical, jazz, and patriotic music.
