Concert Report One: Marion Anderson String Quartet Concert I chose the genre string quartet and attended a concert at First Presbyterian church on October 19th, 2014. Because of its location the sanctuary where the concert took place had many stained glass windows. It was marvelous and in my opinion well suited the feel of classical music. The audience was very responsive and attentive. They applauded when the musicians appeared, in between pieces, and at the very end. They were quick to join in the sing along portion of the concert. Overall the people attending were an older crowd but you could tell they truly appreciated the music. The concert’s duration was around an hour and a half and was quite a surprising performance. I am very new to concert experiences, such as this, so I had no idea what to expect. I was thoroughly impressed by the ability of Marianne Henry, Nicole Cherry, Deidra Lawrence, and Prudence McDaniel, to create such a unified and powerful sound. The energy level of the musicians was extraordinary. They moved with music and felt every note. The glances exchanged between they showed their true enjoyment in what they were doing. All four of them were very concentrated and all consumed in the moment and the music. They came very well prepared if any mistakes were made it was most certainly never noticed by anyone. The string quartet consisted of a cello, two violins, and a viola. The Marion Anderson String Quartet played two pieces. The first, was Follow the Drinking Gourd by Jonathan B. McNair and the second, was a String Quartet in e minor composed by Frederick Delius. Both pieces were broken down into of four acts. The first piece also included tenor singer and narrator Chris Hoffman. Chris was very animated and excelled in keeping the audience’s attention as well as their participation. Both pieces were also written in the early 1900’s which would put them in the 20th century
