Concrete Blocks: A Short Story

The sun is at its highest point of the day, it is about 1 p.m, hot and dry. Rebecca has just finished her last class of the day and started walking home from The University of Sarh. The streets of Sarh are especially crowded today. She hears a bunch of men trying to sell some cheap goods that they swear you’ll never find anywhere else. Rebecca smells all the street food and garbage on the floor. As she walks through the streets of Sarh, she bumps into a bunch of sweaty and tired people who give her dirty looks. The heat is killer and makes everyone exhausted and grumpy, in general the heat makes life in Sarh slower and harder. As she is walking Rebecca sees a concrete square with two windows in the distance. From even outside you can tell that the concrete block is dirty and smelly. That concrete block has a terrible man in it who has a drinking problem which you can smell from the outside. That man is someone who Rebecca has to call her father, and that concrete block is home sweet home to her… Sadly. As Rebecca slowly walks up to her house, the smell
It seems like he is trying to figure out who she is. Rebecca notices the alcohol stains and rips on his t-shirts. She can smell his alcohol breath even from five feet away. Than all of a sudden her father just starts screaming. Rebecca's’ father just starts yelling at her for random things, just to blow off his steam. He slurs out about how useless it is for Rebecca to even be going to school. He tells her that she should just stay at home and cook like a real girl. Rebecca just takes in all the abuse, she has heard him say that so many times, but she can still never get used to it. Any kind of self-confidence or self-respect she has for herself, her father just destroys it.
