Concrete Manipulatives
Manipulatives are concrete tools, such as geoboards, base-ten blocks, five & ten frames, spinners, charts, popsicle sticks, snap-cubes, pattern blocks, handmade materials, ect...
Their purpose is to help students understand and learn mathematics with addition and subtraction operations, place value, geometric shapes, measurement, patterns, ect...
Concrete manipulatives connect to the work of Piaget for his theory of equilibration. When students can't find a solution to a familiar problem, he/she is in a state of confusion, disequilibrium. Concrete manipulatives help children construct (constructivism), their own knowledge, resolving the problem finding a state of equilibrium in the process of equilibration.

    Piaget’s theory of the concrete operational stage occurs in children between the ages of 7-11. This operation depends on concrete examples hence the name “Concrete Operational Stage”. “During this final stage of formal operations, the older child or adult can think logically about potential events and abstract ideas” (Eysenck & Flanagan, 2001, pp.363). Though at this stage children can think more logically they are still limited in some ways.     In comparing both Piaget and Vygotsky, both psychologist feel that expert teachers should help students with developing cognitive skills. Both also feel that a child should be pushed past the limit of which their cognitive ability remains to create a higher level of thinking.
