Healthcare IT, is the latest mechanism to be introduced to the US healthcare system and is now the largest part of the system’s transformation. The ideas behind Healthcare IT are designed to increase the overall efficiency of healthcare by promoting the exchange of medical information electronically. This multi-billion expedition will not only challenge healthcare providers, but also the technologists implementing these changes. Here enlies a conundrum; the battle between health care professionals and the IT team.
In 2010 a multi-million dollar project was at a verge of failure because of disagreement between eClinicaworks, a healthcare software company and Hospital on the approach taken to implement the software. The implementation team at eClinicalworks failed to convince the hospital that the suggested implementation plan would reduce the risk in the proposed project and would lead to successful implementation of the software. In order to remedy the situation, I was assigned to the project to investigate the issues and formulate a resolution. The CFO at the hospital, angry over the lack of cooperation from the eClinicalworks implementation team, proposed putting the project on indefinite hold. At that point, I decided to review the situation and take a different approach.
The implementation can be split into two major components Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Practice Management (PM) Implementation. After interviewing fifteen representatives from the Hospital implementation team I discovered that, EMR implementation team at the hospital is ready to move forward and they are waiting on the PM implementation team to make key decisions like financial data migration and other financial workflow.
