Conflict Between Cinder And Adri, Prince Kai And Queen Levana
Humans, androids, and cyborgs make up New Beijing’s humongous population, but there is only one resident who is both cyborg and Lunar, and she is sixteen-year-old Cinder. This seemingly ordinary teenager wears white gloves and tall boots as a means to guise her true self in fear of the treatment she may receive upon the public’s discovery of her identity. Now, the citizenry of New Beijing is not only being threatened the spread of letumosis, but also must deal with the arrival of the Lunar queen, Levana. In this journal, I will be analyzing three significant conflicts in the novel Cinder between characters: Cinder and Adri, Prince Kai and Queen Levana, and Cinder and Prince Kai. Queen Levana is like a witch in that she has the power to control people’s perception of her both physical and mental demeanor, a tool known to the people as “glamour”. She has the power of mind-control, and the earthens have no defense against this weapon of hers: “So this was the effect of the Lunar glamour, the spell to enchant, to deceive, and turn one’s heart toward you and against your enemies. And amid all these people who despised the Lunar queen, Cinder seemed to be the only one who had resisted her” (Meyer 206). Additionally, the timing of Queen Levana’s arrival is a major inconvenience to Prince Kai, for the recent death of his father, Emperor Rikan, means that he has an upcoming coronation where he will be crowned emperor of New Beijing. For years Luna and New Beijing have been trying to form a treaty with each other; however, there is a discrepancy regarding the agreement. On Luna’s terms, the emperor of New Beijing must assent to marry Queen Levana so that there will be a bloodline connecting Luna and New Beijing. Although the chivalrous prince refuses to marry Queen Levana, he continues to show her respect out of fear for what the indomitable queen may be planning for the near future. Evidence for Prince Kai’s assumption that the queen has truculent intentions is that she has been withholding a cure for the letumosis plague and only reveals it to him after the death of his father.
