Conflict in the picture of Dorian Gray
An interesting novel has conflict, interesting climax and good resolution. In the novel “the Picture of Dorian Gray” : the external conflict is between Dorian Gray- wonderfully handsome, innocent but sell his soul for eternal youth and Basil- a humane man with purely romantic values which has unique climax and surprised resolution. The nature of conflict is the inconsistent thought between Basil and Dorian Gray although they are close friend before . “ I will not bare my soul to their shallow……too much of myself”-chap 1 : that is Basil’s wish which conceals his art, one humane man with purely romantic values. However, Dorian Gray who is a young and innocent handsome man then sells his soul for eternal youth ; in Wilde’s own word :” …something fatal….it has a life of its own.” . After having his portrait done, Dorian Gray , under the influence of the eloquent Lord Henry wishes for the picture to age instead of him “ how sad it is ! I shall grow old……I would give my soul for that!”. His sins are more and more after Sibyl’s death. Although Basil reminds Dorian Gray a lot of about his sins, he still doesn’t make change
The climax of conflict is when Basil knows the change in the picture, loses his temper : “ he knew it , and he felt as if blood changed in……it was dank with clammy sweat” . He begs Dorian to kneel and pray forgiveness that means curing Dorian’s soul but he doesn’t do it. Only Basil knows the truth, Dorian Gray wants to conceal it and worries not to want to let anyone know that. To top it all of , the conflict is resolved when Dorian Gray kills Basil. He seems to have lost all vestigates of his former self, doesn’t have any feelings for Basil, formerly his best friend:“ Dorian Gray glanced at the picture and suddenly uncontrol-lable feeling of hatred for basil …” “ …stab again and again”. All these shows his growing list of sins, vices and immoralities
