CONFLICT THEORY OF PROSTITUTION
Introduction:
Social conflict theory is a social theory propounded by Karl Marx which argues that individuals and social groups within society with greater power exploit the weaker sections of society. In this project, we discuss how the conflict theory would assert that the main reason why prostitution still exists is due to the fact that women have not had access to economic opportunity and have had to rely on economic support from men (Women have had to exchange sexual availability (a resource they control) for this support (a resource controlled by men).
Statement of Problem:
To show how prostitution supports the status quo and propitiates inequity between powerful groups and subordinate groups with the help of conflict theory.
Objectives:
This project has the following objectives:
1. To analyze the Conflict Theory of prostitution given by Karl Marx and understand the social concepts related to prostitution. 2. To study various related theories in support and disagreement of the theory given by Karl Marx. 3. To analyze the past of prostitution, its origin and its effect on society.
Hypothesis:
The Conflict Theory would assert that the main reason why prostitution still exists is due to the fact that women have not had access to economic opportunity and have had to rely on economic support from men (Women have had to exchange sexual availability (a resource they control) for this support (a resource controlled by men).
Some conflict theorists frame prostitution as a purely economic issue and claim that it should be decriminalized and treated solely as a labor issue, while other conflict theorists propose that prostitution uniquely affects poor women, for e.g. women of color, who are more likely to be poor than white women.

In 1907-1917, Progressive moral reformers used the white slavery story of the sexually coerced maiden to express extreme criticisms of the business of vice. Therefore, with economic references, reformers depicted the business of prostitution as a “trust” composed of allied interests, viewed red-light districts as marketplaces were “Vice Trust” brought and sold prostitutes, and correlated white slavery with debt peonage. Thus, moral reformers used their economic interpretation of urban vice to push for stricter laws in handling…

In this manner, campaigns against prostitution have been divided on the “meaning” of the organizational approach to what strategies will be used to overcome the ever-changing terminology of prostitution: “As always, political struggles over law evoke political struggles over meaning. The struggle over the meaning of sex work has been nowhere more heated than within feminism” (246). In this manner, the broader fight against prostitution can be consulted in the differing methods of protest used against the changing terms of prostitution (escort services, massage parlors. etc.) that circumvent the moral issue. In contrast to this view, Farley and Lynne (2004) choose to focus on the specific effects of colonization in relation to First Nations women and the exploration of the colonized by the colonizer. In this manner, the historical context of prostitution originates in the colonial economy: “Colonizers used First Nations women as domestic servants (including sexual servants) and as objects to provide sex acts to First Nations men in order to offer incentive to the men to remain in labor bondage” (Farley and Lynne 111). In this manner, Farley and Lynne utilize a different approach to prostitution than does Brock (2012) in the…

How to understand and deal with prostitution is the issue expressed in “Enough Already, It’s Time We Decriminalize Prostitution” by Patty Kelly. The thesis of this essay is that criminalizing prostitution is not eliminating the issue but causing more of them. Prostitution is becoming so familiar that we need to decriminalize it because it is not going away anytime in our lifetime or the next. This is shown by the fact that in 2005 eighty-four thousand people were imprisoned for prostitution or prostitution-related offenses. Patty Kelly pleads that where it has been legalized people are more satisfied with their jobs and are more often there voluntarily instead of being forced to be there. This is supported by the fact that out of one hundred…

% of prostitutes are from their homeland (Poulin). If legal prostitution has seemed to go wrong in these countries, then it seems logical to believe it wouldn’t work in the United States; however, the element that has made this legalization fail in other countries is the lack of government effort to shut down the illegal prostitute organizations and brothels. These countries still let pimps and criminals run this legal act. The idea isn’t to legalize prostitution and leave the subject alone; it is to legalize prostitution and regulate it heavily. With a crackdown on human trafficking and close inspection of licensed brothels, prostitution can begin to be more open and regulated, not underground and dangerous. This newly found “open prostitution” would damage the morality of women. Many women activists view prostitution as degrading, but “Jane Roe II, argued that if a woman had the right to an abortion (a right originally granted in the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade), then the right to privacy implicit in that decision also gave her the right to sell her body for sexual purposes” (“Prostitution”). Some feminists argue that prostitution is wrong because men are using them for their bodies and not their personalities, but “a woman has the right to completely control--and even sell--her sexual and reproductive capabilities…women are being punished for not conforming sexually to…

In the industry of prostitution, the biggest issue is the rapid spread of sexually transmitted diseases. The rapid spread is due to the industry’s “underground” nature, and the unsafe manners in which they handle themselves. Legalizing prostitution would allow the government to regulate the activity to strictly disease-free individuals, thus, stopping the rapid spread of life threatening diseases. The government could establish brothels where all clients and prostitutes must have regular checkups in…

Debra Satz proposes multiple proponents for prostitution in her book “Why Some Things Should Not Be For Sale”. Satz arching argument against prostitution is that “it reinforces board patterns of sex inequality”. Satz targets three popular controversies from the economic, essentialist, and egalitarian approaches. She states that prostitution is not inherently wrong but it is the social implications that make prostitution negative. Satz states that prostitution would be a positive and acceptable factor if the society it was based in did not equate a degradation of gender equality to the sex market. Though I do believe that prostitution does create inequality between males and females, it is my position that Satz overlooks the most impactful aspect of the prostitution argument. Prostitution bypasses the foundation of healthy relationships, which degrades the physiological stability of the participants to form healthy relationships.…
