It is often said that people today try to fit in the crowd. Also known as conformists. Those people do not understand that there other people out there that want to be themselves also known as individualists. The general argument made by the author of the article, “Individuality and Social Conformity --- Thoreau’s View,” Henry David Thoreau believes that human beings should be self-reliant and live a simple life. Thoreau points out how men are losing their humanity. He states that they work at unfulfilling jobs just to get by day by day. I agree that men are losing their humanity. He states that they work at unfulfilling jobs just to get by, day by day (Par.2). Although he believes that theory,
Logan Feys believes a different one. Feys believes that “Most of the time you should be an active and contributing member of society. But from time to time, get society out of your life and out of your mind-- not permanently (necessarily), but from time to time.” (Par.10) He believes that you should be your own person but also be one with society. I believe Feys heavier than I do with Thoreau. Feys sets an excellent point, he states that we should take society out of our lives temporarily. I think that is perfect for people because when you are having rough times with things it is better to get out of it other than staying in it. Ultimately, we are currently living in a society where “we are under constant pressure to surrender our individuality to the will of the majority, the school, the workplace, and the family¨( Feyes par. 6) Some people, however, are more optimistic about our ability to be ourselves in the face of such overwhelming odds. The young author of the article, “Individuality vs. Conformity: A Healthy Middle?” asserts that although it is difficult, we should at least try to find that “delicate balance between complete individuality and complete uniformity” (par. 7).
When it comes to the topic of conformity most of us will readily agree that we want to be different. However, not many of us can live up to that expectation. In fact, most of us give over our individuality, our uniqueness, to be part of a group in order to fit in—not Leopard Man though! Leopard Man is described by Logan Feys in his article, “The Sociology of Leopard Man” as “no ordinary freak.” Leopard Man is covered from head to toe in leopard spots, and he lives alone in the wilderness; nevertheless, he is happy. Therefore I believe that you can find the middle. I also believe that you can find the healthy middle because it could be your choice to be where you want. People can decide to be who they want to be and who they can be. They people who do all the bad and crucial things in the world are called non-conformists. Other people who do there own thing and stand out from the crowd are called individuality. Individualists::Lady Gaga, Nikki Manaj, and Drake. non-conformists:Dr.Seuss, Steve Jobs, and George W. Bush.
