When he finally did kill the pig he soon became obsessed with hunting, this was the end of his innocence. Soon after Jack started to wear the mask. When Jack wore "the mask," he felt confident, "liberated from shame and self consciousness." (64) The mask symbolizes how Jack has changed throughout the book and makes him feel powerful which brings out the violence and cruelty in him.
