Conscious Capitalism
Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business
By: John Mackey & Raj Sisodia
The title of the book really strikes at the heart of one of the greatest challenges societies face today. Capitalism itself has been transformed into what society views as a profit seeking, only the bottom line matters idea. Conscious Capitalism redirects, those willing to listen, people’s attention that capitalism should be about a higher purpose, stakeholder’s integration, conscious leadership and a conscious culture. Businesses can be successful by practicing conscious capitalism and do not need to be profit driven corporations that let the consequences of their actions fall upon others and the environment unknowingly. A bit of a side not here, but I headed to Antigua on my honeymoon flying on American Airlines when the flight attendant saw me reading Conscious Capitalism. She turned to me and said, “Conscious Capitalism? What is that?” I was only about half way through the book but we had a quick five minute conversation about how companies can be conscious of their employees, environment, shareholders, etc. We conversed about how she didn’t feel American Airlines was interested in its employees feedback, (too bad I wasn’t on Southwest Airlines), and the employees felt underappreciated and that the company only cared about being profitable, even at the expense of their employees, customers, etc. She left me with the parting words of, “Well you are young and the world needs optimistic entrepreneurs who can make the world a better place. I am happy to know there are still people who care”. I felt saddened that she was so pessimistic, but equally gratified that she had confidence in future generations to make the changes society so desperately needs. Conscious leaders seek to make a positive impact on the world through their organization because they share a deeply embedded sense of purpose.
