This essay is designed to help us explore “The internet and digital technology” Also Known as the Techno-social world. The revolution of the internet has become so because of the increased use of the internet for various purposes like: communication, social media networking and many more. It most recently used in the area of information finding, e.g. Research. It is currently known as the “triple revolution” (Rainie and Wellman 2012). In depth of this essay I would be arguing of the usefulness of the internet and how it can be applied in todays’ digital world. Communications and technology are deeply embedded into our everyday lives as people. It either helps or destroys how we think, and associate with others. Especially for those who live in societies that are rich in digital communication technology. They also have opportunities to share information, it significantly becomes easy for them to have and identify interpersonal commonalities, get to know others, interact and form social connections with people around them or even across the world. It can be so much that they can easily be categorized as those living the techno-social lives. (see Chayko, forthcoming; Ito and Okabe 2005; and Zeynep Tufekci's blog technosociology.org).
In the modern era of technology, digitally enabled connections are created at almost every social junction that can be thought of. Especially to those who spend significant time in expressive over instrumental internet use (Tufecki 2008). People today become part of a long distance, somewhat intangible groups over social media than forming relatively personal or face-to-face groups like going for a cup of coffee with a friend or two.
Now the questions are quite simple but a lot of people would find it hard to answer or even try to avoid it. However, why don’t we start by asking what the consequences are of having close and regular availability to one another? Or Has face-to-face interaction been pushed aside by these new tech-toys and gadgets? And are certain social media platforms like; Instagram and Facebook making us lonely? A very famous novelist by the name Stephen Marche asked this question (2012).
Now that we know a little about internet and digital technology, let us discus some of it profound benefits in length. As we know the internet is more like a gateway that channels us to the entire world, giving us a large field of information to draw from and also allows us to access this information easily, with a 24/7 access. As long as we have power (electricity) and internet access (Broadband network, wireless etc.)
