The Russian actor and director 'Constantin Stanislavski' was born in January, 1863: In Moscow, Russia. He was born into a wealthy family who had a love for theatre. Stanislavski at the very young age of 14 began his theoretical journey joining his family along the way; He then continued to develop his skills in theatre, doing performances with other acting groups alongside working in his families manufacturing business. In 1885 he gave himself the stage name 'Stanislavski' - A name of another he met. (His birthname was Konstantin Sergeyevich Alekseyev).

Stanislavski believed that actors needed to bring real life situations (realism) to the stage and was against naturalism. Realism involves many things such as 'the forth wall' . The forth wall is an invisible wall within a box set where a character speaks the audience without the other characters knowing. For an example, during a monologue a character may speak to the audience asking why something is happening to them in a moment of despair. Also as part of this method, actors are not allowed to have their backs to the audience.
This method became very popular because everyday people in the audience could relate to the situation and the characters in the performance.
