Define the term globalization. What effect does globalization have on popular culture? Provide an example of how American popular culture has influenced other countries, or how the United States has imported popular culture from other countries. Merriam-Webster defines globalization as “the act or process of globalizing; the state of being globalized, especially the development of an increasingly integrated global economy marked especially by free trade, free flow of capital, and the tapping of cheaper foreign labor markets” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2012). Items such as Hello-Kitty, Coma-con and anima are both popular cultures that have made their way to the United States. The advertisement is focused on masculine activities, based on the action movie portrayal. Additionally, the commercial states “It’s not for for women.” By using this line, this encourages women to try the product, sort of like the fruit from the forbidden tree. • What type of lifestyle is presented? Is it realistic? Why or why not? Macho, action packed lifestyle with the man shooting villains, riding an ATV, and killing snakes. Not realistic, but the advertisement states that it is portraying an action movie. • What is the text, written or in another form, of the message? What do you see and hear: written or spoken words, photos, drawings, logos, design, music, sounds, and so on? The main point is the ad is that this a diet drink that men can drink, it is manly and does not have the stigma of a typical diet drink. It has 10 calories vice the normal zero calories and should only be drank from men and not women • What is the hidden text? What is unstated or implied in the message?
