Contents Of A Dead Man's Pockets Analysis
Motivational slogans appear everywhere, it seems. Printed on water bottles, or painted into murals, and sewn onto t-shirts, they fly their enthusiastic flags wherever the eye should look. One particular saying that has become quite popular lately reads, “live life to the fullest.” The average teenager sees it so often that they become callous to the truth of this simple, cliché saying. For God did indeed create humans to live their lives to the fullest, to enjoy their Creator's marvelous gifts of life and the world around us, and in doing so to give glory to Him who made all things. Unfortunately, the majority of the population rush through their nerve-wracked days, speeding from one thing to the next in order to climb higher on the social ladder as they disregard the true purposes that God created mankind for. Two examples of such people appear in a couple of short stories, one by Jack Finney and another by Kate Chopin. Tom Benecke in “Contents of a Dead Man's Pockets” undergoes a rattling event that causes him to reconsider his …show more content…
Both characters react in contrary ways, however, with Tom resolving to change and acting on this resolution, whilst the lovelorn Mamzelle wallows in her sorrow, but makes no move to change her situation. Between the two separate reactions and characters, a vast majority of readers can relate to such a confrontation by reading the short stories and analyzing the two responses. Hopefully, most people would come to the conclusion that Tom moves on in a much more desirable way than Mamzelle's apathetic breakdown. When one takes action and reclaims what time has yet to remain un-squandered, then he or she finally begins to fulfill one of the purposes for which God created them – to enjoy the marvelous creation of God in this world, and to love the wonderful people that He has placed in

In the story written by Jack Finney, an assumed marketer at a grocery store risks his life for what he considers to be an extremely important piece of paper. More precisely, the paper flies out of his open window, landing on the ledge of his high-rise building. The paper lands too far beyond his reach, and because Tom cannot conceive of abandoning all of the research he has completed, he climbs onto the narrow ledge, beginning what becomes a physically precarious and psychologically agonizing journey to retrieve the yellow paper. I believe this to be exceedingly dim-witted, however understandable – as the modern pressures of civil life can cause one to place work above all else,…

This is faced mainly by Tom, who is facing a life threatening disease, Leukaemia. Tom throughout the novel acts as a catalyst for change, helping characters find who they are but also travels on an inner journey himself. Toms own physical journey is towards a fast approaching death which is shown through dialogue between Tom and Meg when he says, “I was told the infection was running its course”. But his acceptance of his fate enables others to be healed. This journey is shown when Tom’s doctor has given the short time period in which he has to live, prompting and encouraging Tom to have sex before he dies. His immaturity and teenager lifestyle is shown when he and Meg are on the beach and Tome tries to seduce Meg into having sex with him. Tom constantly uses repetition of his dying status to make people feel sorry for him. This is shown when Tom says,” So how about it? Help me. I’m going to get sick again. And I won’t get better. Your parents won’t find out”. Through the use of syntax, Gow emphasises to the audience how it is Toms Last chance and the great significance and importance this would have on Tom. Meg reluctantly refuses. This then prompted Tom as he learned to accept his illness he also learnt that family time is far more important than sex. He turned to listening to people such as Coral. Tom being the catalyst for change not only helped to change Corals and other…

    Anne Quindlen Analysis

    • 543 Words
    • 2 Pages

Anne Quindlen’s simplistic view to” give up the nonsensical and punishing quest for perfection” will only work in a perfect society, but society is not perfect. While some conform to the standards of perfection to make others proud, most conform out of necessity. “The joker” does not want to be the worker. “The goofball” does not want to be “the thinker”. They conform because in order to get stable job, in order to support their family society demands them to become someone they aren’t. The thousands of prospect actors and actresses swamping Hollywood with hope in their eyes only to get turn down or put into thirty second commercials is proof that you cannot always live the life you want and make a living out of it. It’s easy for a wealthy middle aged woman to tell others to “give up” and live life. She doesn’t go to bed hungry, she doesn’t go to bed worrying how she’ll pay her bills, she doesn’t go to bed worrying how she’ll feed her children, but for millions of Americans that isn’t reality. For millions of Americans they have no opportunity to leave their “backpack full of bricks far behind” and become a stay at home parent. Some may argue that Quindlen isn’t directing her speech to these Americans; her audience is the wealthy and/or educated graduates of a private college in New England. But the wealthy and educated are exactly the people who need to be pushed, who need to strive to become perfect to better society. The rich and educated have the largest impact on society. If they were encouraged to give up and deny societies’ expectations of them, who else will pull society to the great heights it can achieve? Who else will make break through scientific discoveries? Who else will come up with brilliant business ideas and put them to action? Our…

“The proper function of man is to live, not exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” Jack London said that. Jack London was the writer of “The Call of the Wild” It’s an adventure book. I think knowing that he wrote that book adds more to the quote, but I’ll go more into that in the next paragraph. This quote means a lot to me. It inspires me to take risks.…

This friend was a taxi driver and boasting about the fact that he was as old as a quarter of a century. The man thought to himself, “When I’m a quarter of a century, I won’t be driving a taxi.” (Sayrafiezadeh, Page 6) This was an example of a situational irony because the man thought was that he was going to be successful by the time he was twenty-five, but he was going down an equally awful path. He was making only $7.50 an hour, which could have easily been less than what a taxi driver made. The fact that the man felt that by the age he would be twenty-five years old, he would be onto brighter things. The narrator, who is the man then went on to say, “I had dreams of grandeur. I didn’t know how to get there, but I knew that it would work out.” (Sayrafiezadeh, Page 6) Having dreams of grandeur literally means that he had dreams of becoming of high rank or social importance, but he did not know how it was going to happen for him, he just knew it would. The fact that this man did not become of high rank means that you should not just sit around and wait for things to happen for you. That distinct part of “Appetite,” really made me think about how there are countless amounts of people living like that, expecting things to happen, but when reality strikes, most of the time, you do not become something special without taking charge of your life. Like this man and most other people, I also have “Dreams of grandeur,” I do not want the life I am living to become a waste of time. What is the purpose of life, if you are not living to your max potential? My father tells me a very specific saying that I use to become the best I can be possibly. He says, “Luke, you do not want to be forty-five years old, sitting in an apartment all alone watching Netflix on a holiday like Thanksgiving, or Christmas, thinking…

In the story The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, the author uses the theme, “individuals should always follow their dreams,” to teach the reader lessons about life. When Santiago is with the crystal merchant, the crystal merchant reveals his unfulfilled dream to go on a religious pilgrimage to Mecca. People of different classes and cultures all traveled to Mecca to fulfill their dreams. “All who went there were happy at having done so.”(55) All these people followed their dreams which led to happiness. They didn’t let anything, like being poor, stop them. If they allowed something to stop them, they could have ended up like the crystal merchant who has not accomplished his dream, and doesn’t have anything to look back on and be happy about. Santiago followed his dream and became truly happy with his life. When individuals follow their dreams, finally fulfilling it isn’t the only important part; the journey along the way can be just as valuable. While Santiago searched for his treasure, he learned many lessons of significance.…

There are several quotes that come to mind take for instance, “When I believe in nothing, I do not want to meet you, when you believe in nothing”, this quote from Voices is short but it can be interpreted as saying the reader needs think about their life plans and goals rather than taken the easy road in life. By reading the following quote from Porchia you can have several ideas to draw upon maybe he wants the reader to think deeply of in there day to day life rather than being unconscious to certain things of the world. Another concept from reading this quote you want to keep company that is educated and has a meaning in life rather than living your whole life with no purpose. This quote could make you laugh when you really take the time out to look into the words and examine the meaning…
