He was standing on the ledge and was frozen, not knowing what to do. He was thinking, thinking about falling. He stood there frightened. His mind was in a whirl, thinking about what he would lose if he fell; his wife, the family that he could have, his life, his friends, his wonderful job, he would lose all of it. Then he thought about falling. Would it be so bad? His adrenaline went up as he thought about this. Tom’s mind went off again thinking about leaving this world, the life he would leave. His mind pushed everything he loved away and just thought about falling, falling, falling. The wind in his face, the weird feeling in his stomach that he loved, and the anticipation of hitting the ground. He started to sway which brought him back to focus, but that didn’t keep his mind from wandering off.
A couple seconds later, he heard a noise from above. It sounded like a person. It was! It was his neighbor, Carl. Carl had always wanted him dead, from the moment he moved in. They’d had a rough start.
When he was moving in, Carl ran into him and knocked over his very valuable, antique china he had and broken it all. Tom sued Carl for it because he wouldn’t pay for it, but Tom lost. Not long after the trial, Carl spray painted on his door. Then, Tom had to pay for a new door, which cost heaps of money. They’ve had more interactions that weren 't the best either.
Clink, clink, clink. The sound of a metal pole hitting brick. Carl saw Tom and thought he would terrorize Tom with his metal pole from the construction sight. Tom looked up and saw the metal pole. “You repulsive rat! What are you doing on the ledge?” Carl bellowed.
Tom said sarcastically, “Just hanging out.”
The smell of smoke wafted out of Carl’s window down to Tom. “I think your dinner is burning.” Tom hollered. Carl turned around quickly and dropped the metallic pole. The pole, coming down incredibly fast, missed him by one fourth of an inch. Tom yelped and

In the story written by Jack Finney, an assumed marketer at a grocery store risks his life for what he considers to be an extremely important piece of paper. More precisely, the paper flies out of his open window, landing on the ledge of his high-rise building. The paper lands too far beyond his reach, and because Tom cannot conceive of abandoning all of the research he has completed, he climbs onto the narrow ledge, beginning what becomes a physically precarious and psychologically agonizing journey to retrieve the yellow paper. I believe this to be exceedingly dim-witted, however understandable – as the modern pressures of civil life can cause one to place work above all else,…

He began his new life standing up, surrounded by cold darkness and stale, dusty air. Metal ground against metal; a lurching shudder shook the floor beneath him. He fell down at the sudden movement and shuffled backward on his hands and feet, drops of sweat beading on his forehead despite the cool air. His back struck a hard metal wall; he slid along it until he hit the corner of the room. Sinking to the floor, he pulled his legs up tight against his body, hoping his eyes would soon adjust to the darkness. With another jolt, the room jerked upward like an old lift in a mine shaft. Harsh sounds of chains and pulleys, like the workings of an ancient steel factory, echoed through the room, bouncing off the walls with a hollow, tinny whine. The lightless elevator swayed back and forth as it ascended, turning the boy’s stomach sour with nausea; a smell like burnt oil invaded his senses, making him feel worse. He wanted to cry, but no tears came; he could only sit there, alone, waiting. My name is Thomas, he thought. That … that was the only thing he could remember about his life. He didn’t understand how this could be possible. His mind functioned without flaw, trying to calculate his surroundings and predicament. Knowledge flooded his thoughts, facts and images, memories and details of the world and how it works. He pictured snow on trees, running down a leaf-strewn road, eating a hamburger, the moon casting a pale glow on a grassy meadow, swimming in a lake, a busy city square with hundreds of people bustling about their business.…

Sometimes it takes a near death experience to realize what is important in life and what is not. A person is amid choosing whether to help out a family member in trouble or to complete a certain task of his own. The person selfishly goes to complete the task. One can refer that it was wrong to not help the family member. No matter what, family should be the number one priority and that is a prominent theme in "Contents of the Dead Man's Pocket" by Jack Finney and a similar theme may be seen in Double Daddy by Penny Parker and Diary of a Mad Blender by Sue Shellenbarger.…

“Ah ha!” I cried triumphantly, latching onto a thick root. I stretched my opposite hand up, dangerously holding on with only the one, to fumble for the flat ground above. Once safely on I pushed myself up, similarly to climbing from a pool, and gazed proudly at my sister. A smirk danced across my face before I realized how long I had taken. We stared down the waterfall before jumping ungracefully across the small river that fed it. Together we climbed down onto the higher of two edges. Regarding the black depths below, a nervous pit began forming in the pit of my stomach. My dad joined us and without a thought sprung easily over the lower and landed with a crash in the water. He came up gasping for air and shivering at we both laughed completely ignoring the fact that…

Sitting on the ledge of the roof of their apartment, a couple admired the cityscape and high rises in the distance. The man, looking down, had a sudden urge to jump, and not only that but to push his love down to the pavement twelve stories bellow. Quickly, he shook off this odd crazing for a final skydive, but he wondered if she thought the same thing. Why had he thought of it in the first place? Not being a man to fear heights but certainly to fear the fall of himself or his beloved, it came as a sort of shock. Gravity, it seemed, was working harder than ever, as if it had someone to impress. It pulled on him like it never had before, calling him to come back down to its level. Again he looked down, he saw the bug-like cars scurrying around the city and the specs of people making their ways home, all moving toward different places, missing the beauty of it all. Only available to the couple, the birds-eye view revealed this beauty.…
