The beginning of the poem starts out very depressing, the soldier talks as if they are old men on their death beds. ""Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge"(2), this line implies how miserable the soldier 's are, their sick, weak, and enduring unbearable conditions. They are walking toward their camp, which the poem tells us is quite a distance away. But they are so tired they are sleeping as they walk toward the camp. These men don 't even have sufficient clothing, some have lost their boots and most are covered in blood. "Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots / Of tried, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind"(6-7). This line tells us that these men are so exhausted they have become numb to the war and blood-shed around them. The soldier 's have become numb to the 5.9 inch caliber shells flying by their heads, the bombs bursting behind them, and their fallen comrades body 's lying next to them.…

Unfortunately the relationship between the speaker and the mother in the poem is unclear as it is stated that her mother has passed away and is in a grave, which is shown here in the following excerpt “… into the grave!” but all throughout the poem she speaks of her mother’s courage, which is shown here “courage that my mother had. Went with her, and is with her still… if instead she’d left to me. The thing she took into the grave!–That courage like a rock” which is not typically something that is said by someone who didn’t have a good relationship with the person who’d passed…

Throughout a war, many men will be titled as a casualty. The amount of death resulting from war is emphasized when the narrator says, “On the last day an astonishing number of English heavies opened up on us with high-explosive, drumming ceaselessly on our position, so that we suffered severely and came back only eighty strong” (Remarque 2). Just before this bombardment, the company consisted of 150 healthy men. Sometimes, other battles could be even more damaging to an army. Although the men were injured during the war, sometimes even the animals suffered. The pain endured from animals is shown when the narrator says, “Those are the wounded horses. Some gallop away in the distance, fall down, and then run on farther. The belly of one is ripped open, the guts trail out. He becomes tangled in them and falls, then he stands up again” (Remarque 63). It is so disheartening when one realizes how much these innocent animals suffered because of the war. Animals are not looking for violence or killing. They are merely there because they are forced to pay for everyone elses mistakes. The…

During World War II, German military forces rushed across Europe at an alarming rate. They were determined to gain complete global control and to extend their racist, and supremacist ideals to the entire world which they believed was inherently theirs’. They were cruel in their methods of accomplishing that goal. Though they did not succeed, their tyranny left a stain on the world. Their means for world domination were, racist propaganda, modern weapons, and the world’s largest military force.…

Being himself in the war, as most American young men at the time, Mailer gives a arguably more accurate depiction of the experiences of war and the intense level of masculinity which is thus pushed to the forefront of most conflict between men. One of these themes is the dehumanization of soldiers. The soldiers are continuously referred to as machines within the novel. At one point, Mailer describes this dehumanization stating, “When a man was harnessed into a pack and web belt and carried a rifle and two bandoliers and several grenades, a bayonet and a helmet, he felt as if he had a tourniquet over both shoulders and across his chest. It was hard to breathe and his limbs kept falling asleep.”[4]:24 Thus, in this instance, the soldier is losing grasp of his bodily functions and simply going through the motions of being a “soldier”.…

He was a slim, dead, almost dainty young man of about twenty. He lay with one leg bent beneath him, his jaw in his throat, his face neither expressive nor inexpressive. One eye was shut. The other was a star-shaped hole. This quotation, from “The Man I Killed,” describes the corpse of a young Vietnamese soldier whom O’Brien killed with a grenade. Many Americans during the war experienced a lot of the same horrific moments. Which they would later have to cope with during and after the war. This would later be called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The drive of this piece is to show the effect of the deaths of those considered to be the “enemy ‘on those involved in the war. War is not indiscriminate hate but indiscriminate killing and O ‘Brien condemns these violent acts through their words.…

The plea bargaining process is very important to the criminal justice system because without it the criminal justice system would grind to a halt. Plea-bargaining is important because if every case went to a trial it would take years for criminals to get from the time of arrest till the time of trial. Conflict can bare negative consequences on people’s lives forcing them to do things they wouldn’t choose to do and breaking them mentally. The commonly recognized conflict of war changes people’s life’s in many ways but in the poem ‘Disabled’ by Wilfred Owen sharing the story of a battered war veteran, shows that it has had a depressing effect on the main character. The tribulations of war not only affected him physically by needing three of his limbs amputated but affected him deep down, making him feel less of the man he use to be. The conflict of war had changed him from an attractive ladies man to nothing but a saddened and crippled figure left to spend years in an institution.…

The Great Depression which began in 1929 was the greatest economic crisis in the U.S. history. The period altered the political and economic institutions in the United States. The great depression brought with it deep social and personal problems as well as new strains of thought and culture. I believe that during the great depression it had a great impact in the economics because of many reasons. One of them is the stock market and it cost business to be foreclosed. It also affected social but not as much as the economic. And the least affected is political because they got affect just little.…
