Continual Strength Comes from the Heart Maya Angelou once said, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” This quote states that you must encounter obstacles in order to find out more about yourself. I believe in perseverance. Perseverance is the willingness to continue on. I do not wish nor do I want people to judge my character for my success but rather for my perseverance shown. People, as a whole, observe peoples’ success in life rather than one’s strength that shown. My perseverance is what has shaped me over the years. “Don’t be offended when I say this but your team isn’t ready for 5A division. You guys might as well forfeit all the games now,” is what most people have the decency to tell me about my team. I can count numerous times where my team has been doubted or overlooked. I have come to the realization that I am limited in most situations but I can learn to just face the obstacle…whatever it may be…and overcome it. Without the willingness to move on, I would not be able to write the way I do. I write about tough events but I shed some light on it because it is necessary to look into the positivity of situations in order to move on. I write about my team and family and how we overcome situations. My writing is a way of release of what I put aside in order to persevere. In the sense of the writing aspect itself…my perseverance pushes me to move past my ‘writer’s block’ in written pieces. It is safe to say that I did not like writing but I have learned to overcome those struggles. It has pushed me to become a better
