Continuing My Journey
Personal Goals
a. One of my short-term goals is to make it through the day. That’s at the beginning of a lengthy list, but in all seriousness, I hope to complete this course successfully with minimal added stress. After much thought and prayer, I have decided to accept the position as nurse manager that I was asked to consider. I could easily delve into a multitude of goals that I would like to accomplish, but I wanted to try and stay focused on professional goals related to this course.
b. A couple of my long-term goals are to complete the RN to BSN program within the next two years, and then to continue my educational journey by earning my master’s degree in nursing. I am not certain today that I want to become an ARNP, but I do know that I want to continue my education. I want my daughter to know the value of education and knowledge. What better way than to lead by example.
In choosing a mentor, I looked to my colleagues. I can peer through a window and have the advantage of seeing the good qualities that I would like to possess as a leader. Unfortunately not all of those windows are without negative qualities creating a haze. I have considered several nurses that I work with to be my mentor. I am having difficulty narrowing it down. As I contemplate my decision, I realize that I work with countless great nurses and leaders. I can appreciate positive attributes from each, but can recognize characteristics that I hope to avoid acquiring in my practice. Preliminarily I would like to ask Dee Arnold, RN, BSN, MSN, to take me under her wing and help guide me and encourage me on my journey in continuing my education. She has been where I’ve been. I feel like she can offer insight and advice that I can benefit from.
The role I have chosen is nurse manager of the emergency department. This position
